The CCRI Knights men's basketball team hosted the Tigers of Roxbury Community College from Roxbury, Mass. on Tuesday for a Region XXI non-league game. The Knights defeated the Tigers 83-74. With the victory, the Knights improved to 3-0 overall and in Region XXI play.

The game went back-and-forth in the first half with neither team gaining a clear advantage. The Knights opened the second half with a 16-9 run to gain the lead and were able to keep that lead for the remainder of the half to eventually win by the final score of 83-74. The Tigers tried to get the Knights to play their up-tempo style, but CCRI showed great patience and executed their offense, which forced Roxbury to commit 27 fouls, putting the Knights at the free throw line early and often where the Knights shot 19-31. The Knights also dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Tigers 49-26, including 39 defensive rebounds which gave Roxbury no second chance scoring opportunities.

Leading the way for the Knights was co-captain Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, Conn.), scoring a team-high 19 points with seven assists, followed by freshman Marshall Nelson (Perth, Australia), who added 13 points. Also helping the Knights was co-captain Malieke Young (Providence), who had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Jordan Grant (Ledyard, Conn.) added 11 points and seven rebounds and Grant Gillis (Jamestown) added eight points and team-high 12 rebounds.

“We were able to dictate the tempo of the game both offensively and defensively,” head coach Rick Harris said. “We were able to find their scorers and make them earn their baskets. We get one day of practice to get ready for UConn-Avery Point."

The next game for the Knights will be Thursday, the 13th, at 7 p.m., when they host the Pointers of UConn-Avery Point from Groton, Conn. for another Region XXI non-league game at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse in Warwick.

Lady Knights fall to Roxbury

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Tigers of Roxbury Community College from Roxbury, Mass. in a Region XXI non-league game. The Lady Knights lost to the Tigers 93-61. With the loss, the Lady Knights record dropped to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in Region XXI play.

Both teams battled closely in the first half, with Roxbury taking a 37-31 lead into the halftime break. However, the Lady Knights were already getting into foul trouble. In the second half, the Tigers of Roxbury were able to extend their lead to 16 points and the Lady Knights had two starters with four fouls. With the foul total climbing and tough play from Roxbury, the Tigers kept extending their lead and go on to win by the final score of 93-61.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was tri-captain Jesse Ossian (Chandler, Ariz.) with a team-high 18 points, including a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line with eight assists and seven rebounds, followed by tri-captain LaShana Tolliver (Watervliet, N.Y.) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Rounding out the Lady Knights offensive attack was tri-captain Amber Edwards (Boston, Mass.) with eight points and six rebounds and Lyric Artis (Albany, N.Y.) with eight points.

The next games for the Lady Knights will be next weekend, when they travel to Frederick, M.D. to compete in the Best Western Invitational. Saturday, the 15th, the Lady Knights will face Frederick CC at 3 p.m. and Sunday, the 16th, they will face defending Region XX Champion Chesapeake College.

Lady Knights upended by Monroe in District Semi-Final

The CCRI Lady Knights women's soccer team traveled to Newark, N.J. this past weekend to compete in the District E Women's Soccer Championship. The Lady Knights faced-off against the No.2 ranked (NJCAA DI poll) Mustangs of Monroe College from New Rochelle, N.Y. The Lady Knights lost to the Mustangs 5-1. With the loss, the Lady Knights end their season with a 10-5-1 record. Monroe advanced to the District final, where it beat Monroe Community College from Rochester, N.Y. 1-0. The Mustangs advance to the NJCAA DI Women's Soccer National Championship in Melbourne, Fla.

CCRI played the Mustangs tough for the first 15 minutes of the game, until All-American Ana Carol Rodriguez scored from close range to give Monroe the 1-0 lead. 12 Minutes later, Melanie Formosa scored on a corner kick to give Monroe the 2-0 advantage. Over the next 10 minutes, the Mustangs stampeded the CCRI defense with three more goals by Rodriguez, Samantha Mendez and Gabriella Braga to give Monroe a commanding 5-0 lead. With about 10 minutes left in the half, the Mustangs were awarded a penalty kick and sent Rodriguez to the line to attempt to record a hat trick (three goals in a game). However, Lady Knights' goalkeeper Jennifer Kilburn (Norton, Mass.) came up huge, thwarting the shot while also not allowing a rebound for a follow-up shot attempt.

As the second half began, the Lady Knights did not give-up or lose faith in themselves, even though Monroe continued to play tough. CCRI actually gained momentum and began to create its own scoring opportunities. CCRI tri-captain Stepheny Perez (Providence) had three free kick opportunities for CCRI.  Perez just missed on her first attempt, but scored the Lady Knights’ only goal on her second opportunity. On her third attempt, Perez almost scored again, but the Mustangs keeper deflected the shot off of the crossbar and over the net for a CCRI corner kick. On that corner, Perez served in a nice set piece to sophomore Ashley LeClair (Westerly), who headed the ball towards the low corner of the Monroe goal, but the Monroe Keeper once again made a great diving save. That was the last scoring chance for the Lady Knights, as the game would end with a 5-1 score.

“Monroe College is an excellent team that is loaded with very talented and dynamic players,” CCRI head coach Dennis Grassini said. “They pass and move well without the ball. They are not ranked No. 2 for nothing! Due to some key injuries, we had no choice but to juggle our line-up. However, Coach (Kathy) Bannan and I are so proud of our team for playing hard and giving everything they had. As coaches you cannot ask for more than that. Our kids never gave-up and we applaud them for that."

Artis' record 40 points leads Lady Knights to victory

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Fall River, Mass. to play the Bees of Bristol Community College for a Region XXI non-league game. The Lady Knights defeated the Bees 86-35. With the victory, the Lady Knights improve to 2-0 overall and in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights dominated the game from the opening tip and never looked back. CCRI led 50-17 at the half, and the second half was much of the same, as the Lady Knights cruised to the 86-35 victory.

In just her second game in a CCRI uniform, freshman Lyric Artis (Albany, N.Y.) set a CCRI single game scoring record, as she dropped 40 points on the Bees. Artis shot an impressive 15-28 from the field, including three 3-pointers and 7-8 from the free throw line, while also adding seven rebounds and six blocked shots. The CCRI single game record of 38 points was shared by three former players: Brenda Randall in 1989, Claudia DeFaria in 1992 and Lauren Fogarty in 1995.

Artis was not the only Lady Knight with an impressive night, as three other starters charted double-doubles, led by freshman Anna McDaniel (Taunton, Mass.) with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while adding four blocked shots and sophomore co-captain Amber Edwards (Boston, Mass.) added 12 points, 10 rebounds and adding six assists. Also charting a double-double was co-captain LaShana Tolliver (Watervliet, N.Y.), who had 10 points and 14 rebounds, while also adding three assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Rounding out the CCRI attack was co-captain Jesse Ossian (Chandler, Ariz.), who ran the offense well from the point with five points, a game-high seven assists, nine rebounds and a blocked shot.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be next Tuesday, the 11th, when they host the very potent Tigers of Roxbury Community College at 5:00  p.m. for a Region XXI non-league game.
