Knights excel at Wesleyan

It was a memorable outing for the Knights and Lady Knights Indoor Track and Field teams at the 2014 Wesleyan II Invitational in Middletown, Conn. on Saturday.

The Lady Knights were led by Haley Beausoleil (Plainfield, Conn.), who won the 400 in a school record time of 1:02.21. Then, Beausoleil came back to place second in a season-best time of 27.92 seconds in the 200. She also established a school record in the pole vault with a 2.00m jump that placed her fourth. Shenelle Teixeira (Barrington) placed third in the 400 with a time of 1:03.07. In her first meet of the year, Teondra Silva (Barrington) placed fourth in the long jump with a 4.49m leap. Silva also placed 11th in the 200 with a time of 29.99.

On the men’s side, the Knights had three first-place finishes, led by Samson Olowoporoku (Osun-State, Nigeria) who won the 200 in a time of 24.05 seconds. Olowoporoku also placed fourth in the 400 in a season-best effort of 54.08 seconds. Sophomore Daniel Duquette (North Attleboro, Mass.) won the 600 in a time of 1:26.93. Duquette and Olowoporoku joined forces with Britton Laney (Pascoag) and Joshua Rembert (Boston, Mass.) to win the 4x400 relay in a season-best time of 3:37.46. Laney ran a career-best leg in the relay with a 56.50 split. Britton also placed eighth in the 800 in a career-best time of 2:21.38, and Rembert ran the 400 open race, placing fifth in a time of 54.51 seconds.

Colin Cabral (Cumberland) placing second in the shot put with a school-record toss of 12.74. Cabral was joined by fellow thrower Kevin Redmond (South Kingstown), who also threw well, placing third behind Cabral with his season-best toss of 11.46m. Also competing in field events was Alex Correia (Woonsocket), who placed second in the both the long jump, with a 5.91m leap and in the triple jump with a 12.60m leap.

Other Knights who competed were Joseph Gareri (Uxbridge, Mass.), placing 10th in the 800 with a season and career-best time of 2:25.10 and Nelson Moreno (Pawtucket), who placed 19th in the 200 in a time of 31.83.

The next meet for the Knights and Lady Knights will be Saturday when they travel back to Middletown for another meet at Wesleyan.

Bobby Allen sets mile record at UMass-Lowell

Former CCRI standout and nine-time All-American, Bobby Allen (Cranston), who holds multiple CCRI cross country, indoor and outdoor track records was at it again recently. This time, Allen broke a record running for his new school, UMass-Lowell.

 

On Saturday, the UMass-Lowell River Hawks competed at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational at Boston University. At that meet, Allen broke the River Hawks mile record, running it in 4:02.58.

“It was the best race he as ever run,” UMass-Lowell head coach Gary Gardner said. “We came up with a game plan and he followed it to perfection.  When the race was over he said he could run faster.”     

Lady Knights nail Nassau CC

 

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Garden City, N.Y. to play the Lions of Nassau Community College on Saturday. The Lady Knights defeated the Lions 94-42. With the victory, the Lady Knights improved to 12-5 on the season.

 

The Lady Knights controlled the game and the end result was never in question as CCRI cruised to their seventh road victory of the year.

Five Lady Knights scored in double-figures and three had double-doubles in the contest.  CCRI was led by captain Ahnyyah Jackson (Hackensack, N.J.), who scored a game-high 27 points, including four three-pointers, with seven assists, five steals and three rebounds. Jackson was helped by captain Allexia Barros (New Bedford, Mass.), who charted a double-double scoring 20 points, including five three-pointers, with 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Also having a big game was Amber Edwards (Boston, Mass.) with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, plus four steals, Jess Winegar (Cranston) added 15 points with a career-high five three-pointers and Jesse Ossian (Chandler, Ariz.) also had a double-double of 10 points and 10 assists to go with five rebounds and two steals.

Knights Succumb to Suffolk County CC

The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team traveled to Selden, N.Y. to take on the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College on Sunday. The Sharks are a top-20 Division III squad that used a strong inside game to defeat CCRI 71-50. With the loss, the Knights’ record dropped to 16-9 on the season. Suffolk improved to 11-4 with the victory.

 

The Knights were led by captain Pat Marchand's (Cranston) 17 points and nine rebounds. Marchand was helped in the scoring column by captain Anthony Henry (Danbury, Conn.), who scored 10 points while collecting nine rebounds, and Malieke Young (Providence), who added eight points. 

CCRI’s next game is Tuesday when it travels to Framingham, Mass. to play Mass Bay Community College for a Region XXI non-league game.
