The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team finished its run in the Monroe College Classic on Sunday by facing off against No. 8 Express of Owens Community College from Findlay, Oho and losing 99-63. The Knights fell to 5-2 with the loss, but just finished a stretch in which they played three games in four days against top-10 teams.

On Thursday, they beat No. 9 Dean 88-79 behind Anthony Jernigan’s (East Hartford, Conn.) 29 points. Malieke Young (Providence) added 13 points.

Two days later, CCRI was handed its first loss of the season, 77-57 to Monroe CC. Jernigan had 11 points and freshman Marshall Nelson (Perth, Australia) also had 11 points.

Against Owens, CCRI fell behind early 14-5 to start the game before closing the gap to 23-20 with 9:25 left in the half. However, the Express closed out the half with a 25-10 spurt to go into half time with a 48-30 lead.

Owens started the second half like it ended the first and extended its lead to 24 points at 60-46 after only five minutes.

Jernigan was again the leading scorer with 14 points while Young finished with 12 points. Freshman Grant Gillis (North Kingstown) had eight points and four rebounds while fellow freshman big man Mahda Brewah (Dover, Del.) added eight points and six rebounds with a blocked shot.

“We schedule top notch out-of-region competition to prepare us for our league games and for the playoffs,” said CCRI head coach Rick Harris. “Games like today give us an indication of where we are nationally and help us to get better.

Lady Knights’ comeback falls short to Dean

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Bulldogs of Dean College Thursday evening for a Region XXI league game.  The Lady Knights lost to the Bulldogs 69-64.  With the loss, the Lady Knights record dropped to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights started slowly as Dean was able to build a 12-point lead in the first half, but the Lady Knights were able to cut the lead to 10 points at 34-24 by halftime.

CCRI was led in the first half by captain Amber Edwards (Boston, Mass.) with 10 first-half points. In the second half, Dean built the lead to 17 points with the score 46-29. After a timeout, CCRI came out and played with urgency, helped by the play of sophomore captain LaShana Tolliver (Albany, N.Y.) who scored 20 of her game-high 23 points in the second half.  Tolliver was a force in the paint, utilizing an array of post moves to score and get the Bulldogs’ post players into foul trouble. CCRI cut the lead to four points within the last five minutes of the game but that was as close as they would get.

Tolliver finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds while Edwards had 16 points and team-high 11 rebounds. Rounding out the CCRI attack was captain Jesse Ossian (Chandler, Ariz.) with 10 points and two assists, Anna McDaniel (Taunton, Mass.) with eight points, six rebounds and two assists and Lyric Artis (Albany, N.Y.) with seven points and six rebounds.

On Tuesday, the Lady Knight took on Orange County CC and fell 62-56. Artis had 24 points, while Ossian and Edwards each had 10.

Seven Lady Knights earn All-Region XXI soccer honors

The CCRI women’s soccer team recently received news that seven of its players have been named to the All-Region XXI team.

Those player are Stepheny Perez (Providence), Ashley LeClair (Westerly), Carla Porras (Narragansett), captain Lauren Cattani (Cranston), Selena Canales (Cranston), Jennifer Kilburn (Norton, Mass), and Meghan Rousseau (Richmond).

Perez’ All-Region honor was her second in as many years, as she was the top scorer for the Lady Knights with a team-high 10 goals was tied for the team-high with four assists for a total of 24 points.

LeClair is another two-time All-Region XXI honoree. LeClair was second on the Lady Knights in scoring with nine goals and two assist for 20 total points.

Porras is the third of five two-time All-Region XXI honorees on the 2014 Lady Knights’ squad. Porras may be the most dynamic ball handler on CCRI, always able to weave in and out of defenders and opposing midfielders, which often caused opposing team’s defensive schemes to breakdown. She scored four goals with two assists for 10 total points.

Cattani, another two-time All-Region XXI honoree, was a critical piece to the Lady Knights’ defense over her two years at CCRI. Cattani is a tremendous leader who offered stability and balance to the Lady Knights’ back-line and helped lead the Lady Knights to 14 shutouts while she was a player at CCRI

Canales was another multi-talented, two-time All-Region XXI honoree. As a sophomore, the Lady Knights used Canales’ talent to solidify the defensive area. A converted midfielder and forward, she showed that her skill set can translate anywhere on the field, as she was a top scorer in 2013 with 12 goals and two assists but this year was an asset on defense.

Kilburn joins a growing list of outstanding CCRI keepers.  Under the tutelage of goalkeeping guru and associate head coach Kathy Bannan, a great keeper in her own right, Kilburn flourished as a freshman. In fact, she was so good that she was named NJCAA Division I National Goalkeeper of the Week for the week of Sept. 29 – Oct. 5. During that week she allowed just one goal in three victories for the Lady Knights. For the season, Kilburn had an impeccable 1.28 goals against average, allowing just 21 goals in 16 games and 1,471:14 minutes in net while making a remarkable 134 saves.

Rousseau was another key cog in the CCRI defensive corps. She used lightning fast speed to close the gap on fleet-footed attackers of the CCRI goal.

Five Knights earn All-Region XXI soccer honors

The CCRI women’s soccer team recently received news that seven of its players have been named to the All-Region XXI team.

The players named to the team are Junior Robert (Providence), Alex Padilla (Providence), Evan Gaudreau (Jamestown) and Adam Coutu (Moosup, Conn.), while Nate DaCosta (Warwick) earned honorable mention All-Region XXI honors.

Robert led the Knights in scoring with seven goals and an assist for 15 total points on the year. Robert’s seven goals were far and away the most on the 2014 Knights’ squad. He charted goals in six games and four of them came during the Knights five victories, so his efforts directly contributed to the Knights’ success this year.

At the other end of the field was goalkeeper Padilla, who started as a reserve but became the Knights’ starter about a third of the way into the season. Padilla made an immediate impact in the net while saving some of his best games for the end of the season when the Knights made a tremendous push to get into the Region XXI Championship. He charted two shutouts to go with an excellent 1.71 goals against average, allowing just 17 goals in 10 starts while making 74 saves, many of them in spectacular fashion. Padilla will be a stalwart in net for the Knights in the 2015 season.

Gaudreau, a freshman, came in with a tremendous reputation as a scorer and lived-up to that billing by being the Knights No. 2 scorer with three goals and an assist for seven total points.  Gaudreau took many of the Knights corner kicks was a spark on the offensive end with his dynamic ball handling ability.  Gaudreau will be a major player for the Knights as he returns for his sophomore campaign in 2015.

Coutu was another key piece to the Knights’ defense and earned All-Region XXI honors for the second year. Operating on the last line of defense, Coutu and Padilla solidified the CCRI defense and helped thwart the offensive efforts of the Knights’ opponents.

DaCosta, a freshman, was another key player for the Knights playing in the midfield. DaCosta was one of the key links between the defense and the offense. He took many of the Knights’ free kicks and would often send in passes that would lead to many of CCRI scoring opportunities. DaCosta will be another key piece to the Knights squad in 2015.
