The CCRI Knights golf team finished play at the 2013 NJCAA Division III Golf National Championship at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, N.Y. on Friday. The Knights finished in 11th place with a total team score of 1,028 over the 54-hole championship (tournament was shortened to 54 after third round Thursday was cancelled due to unplayable course because of rain).

The top five teams were the champion Vincennes University from Vincennes, Indiana who shot a 910, followed by Sandhills Community College from Pinehurst, N.C. in second place with a 914. In third place was host school Jamestown Community College shooting a 915, in fourth was Minnesota State Community Technical College from Fergus Falls, Minn. shooting a 916 and in fifth place was Georgia Military College from Milledgeville, Ga. shooting a 918.

As a team the Knights shot a 1,028 over the 54-hole championship and were led by captain Anthony Lovechio (Wakefield), who shot a team-low 237 shooting an 84, 79 and an impressive 74 in the final round, the Knights low round of the championship. He finished in 42nd place overall as an individual.

Lovechio was followed by fellow captain and team MVP Pat O’Connor (North Kingstown), who shot a 244 with an 84 first round, followed by an 81 a 79 on Friday to finish in 56th place individually.

O’Connor was followed by the first woman ever to participate at the Division III Golf National Championship, Gina Bartolotta (Wakefield), whose scores were used for every round, as she shot a 93 first round, followed by an 87 and a 97, giving her a three-day total of 277 to finish in 83rd place.

Bartolotta was followed by Nick DeSalvo (Burrillville) who shot an 89 followed by a 101 and a 91 to finish tied for 84th with teammate Zach Sullivan (Cumberland) who shot a 93 followed by a 90 and 98. They both finished with a three-day score of 281.

Unfortunately for CCRI, it couldn’t move up at all on the final day, as it came into Friday already in 11th place. On Wednesday the Knights shot a 337, 13 strokes better than their first day effort to move from 12th to 11th place in the championship with a two-day total of 687.

They shot a 337 on day two after shooting a 350 on day one. The Knights were led by Lovechio and Connor. Also shooting very well was Bartolotta, DeSalvo and Sullivan. DeSalvo’s score was not used for Wednesday’s scoring.

Individually, the top five golfers to finish the championship were: individual champion Ethan Chamineak from Georgia Military with a 216, Aaron Rondon from South West Wisconsin Tech with a 217, Darren McCormack from Suffolk County CC with a 222 and Nick Thompson of Sandhills CC and Drew Chaddock from Jamestown CC, who both shot a 223.
