Knights drop a pair of games

The CCRI Knights welcomed the Lions of Nassau Community College from Garden City, N.Y. to the Vincent Cullen Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. The Knights lost a hard-fought game with the Lions, 72-62. With the loss, the Knights’ record drops to 11-11 on the season.

Nassau closed out the game with a 12-2 run in the last three minutes to secure the victory. CCRI played great zone defense in the first half, as they held Nassau, who averages 72 points per game, to just 25 first-half points to take a 30-25 lead into the break.

As the second half began, both teams played evenly with the Lions closing the lead to just two points, 33-31, with 18:30 to go.

There were several ties with neither team taking more than a four-point lead in the second half. The game was tied at 60-60 with 3:25 left.

Nassau made their final 12-2 run, putting back second-chance shots and forcing the Knights out of their rhythm on offense.  Nassau went on to win by the final score of 72-62.

CCRI was led by Grant Gillis (Jamestown, R.I.), who scored a team-high 14 points with nine rebounds.

He was followed by sophomore captain, Malieke Young (Providence, R.I.), who scored 13 points, including two 3-pointers and six boards.

Jerome Harris (Hartford, Conn.) also played very well, contributing 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. Jordan Grant (Ledyard, Conn.) came off the bench to score nine points and grab four rebounds, while Mahda Brewah (Dover, Del.) added eight points and eight rebounds with three assists.

A day prior, the CCRI Knights welcomed the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College from Selden, N.Y. to the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse. The Sharks pulled out a 97-91 victory in overtime.

Suffolk Guard Vincent Abbondola hit five 3-pointers in the first half to lead the Sharks with 19 first-half points, giving Suffolk a 45-38 halftime lead.

Suffolk increased its lead to 15 points, 54-39, just two minutes into the second half.

The Knights wouldn’t just roll over and let Suffolk run away with this game, as they battled back to get within one point, 79-78, on a 3-pointer by Young with 2:45 left in regulation.

Suffolk was leading by two points, 84-82, with under 10 seconds left, but Harris launched a 3-pointer to win the game that got almost all the way down, before rimming out. Fortunately for the Knights, the rebound was tipped in by Grant with 6.8 seconds left to tie the score, 84-84, to send the game into overtime.

During the overtime period, Suffolk scored the first basket, but the Knights answered with a 3-pointer by Young to take an 87-86 lead, the Knights’ only lead of the game.

The Sharks’ John Peloso then hit a 3-pointer to put the Sharks up 89-87.

The Knights couldn’t cash-in on a couple of scoring opportunities and were forced to foul. The Sharks went 6-of-6 from the free throw line to seal the victory.

Leading the way for the Knights was Young with 20 points, including six 3-pointers and eight rebounds, while Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, Conn.) added a double-double with 18 points and 11 assists.

Gillis chipped-in with a double-double of his own, with 14 points and a team-high 12 boards and four blocked shots. Freshman guard CJ White (Danbury, Conn.) scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers with three assists.
