Knights soccer squad picks up first victory

The CCRI men’s coccer team scored three second-half goals en route to its first win of the season, defeating Holyoke Community College 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory, the Knights improved to 1-4-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in Region XXI play.

CCRI came out utilizing a new formation and moved some personnel around to see if it could become more offensive-minded.

Despite the new formation, some sloppy defensive play proved to be costly for the Knights late in the first half. A mishap on a pass back to the keeper resulted in an own goal for CCRI, giving Holyoke a 1-0 halftime lead.

However, the Knights responded with a much more offensive-minded second half. In the 75th minute, Junior Robert (Providence) scored on a tremendous individual effort, breaking through the Holyoke defense and beating the keeper to tie the game 1-1. Just over three minutes later it was Robert again, finishing off a feed from Evan Gaudreau (Jamestown) for his second of the game and the eventual game-winning goal. The Knights capped off the scoring in the 85th minute, when freshman Trevor Lopes (Cumberland) added some insurance, hustling for a loose ball and finding the back of the net to give the Knights a 3-1 lead.

Alex Padilla (Cranston, RI) picked up the win for the Knights in goal, turning aside three out of the four shots that Holyoke fired on net.

The Knights will look to continue their winning ways today, when they travel to Springfield Tech for a 4 p.m. game.

Lady Knights’ reach

final of CCRI Classic

The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team continued hosting the CCRI Volleyball Classic on Sunday morning, and they advanced all the way to the finals thanks to a win over NHTI. Once in the finals, CCRI lost to Genessee CC.

In the semis, CCRI won 25-14, 19-25, 25-18, 25-21. CCRI came out loud and began to play like a cohesive unit.

“I am very proud as a coach to start to see our team get it,” said CCRI head coach Sam Amaral. “The girls in game two lost their moment because NHTI was not about to give up that easily. After losing the game two the Lady Knight regrouped in games three and four and fought hard and started to play more like the team I knew.”

Ormarie Colon (Providence) finished with an ace, nine kills and 19 digs, and Kayleigh Clauson (South Kingstown) had an ace, a kill and 35 digs. Also playing very well for CCRI was Sarah Keomorokot (Pawtucket) who had two aces, five kills and 18 digs, and Delyn Pizzaro (homestead, Fla.), who finished with two blocks and 11 kills. Hannah Derefaka (West Warwick) added six kills.

In the finals, CCRI lost 25-14, 25-9 and 25-16.

“The girls were thinking too much and trying to be prefect when good would have been good enough,” Amaral said. “The girls learned a lesson that they will have to earn the respect of the teams they play against.”

Pizzaro finished with seven kills and Colon added an ace and three kills. Derefaka finished with six kills.

Next weekend the Lady Knights will travel to Monroe College in New Rochelle, N.Y. for the New York Classic Tournament, beginning at 9 a.m. each day.

Lady Knights Blanked by Monroe CC

The CCRI women’s soccer team hosted No. 15 ranked (NJCAA DI Women’s Soccer poll) and District rival Monroe Community College from Rochester, N.Y. this past Saturday and lost 3-0.

With the loss, the Lady Knights’ record fell to 3-3.

The Lady Tribunes of Monroe came out strong right from the opening whistle totally dominating the play. However, the CCRI defense kept Monroe off the board until the 41st minute of play, when freshman midfielder Coumba Sow converted on a pass from freshman defender Sydney Frizzelle, giving the Tribunes a 1-0 halftime lead.

Things weren’t much different in the second half of play, but the CCRI defense lead by freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Kilburn (Norton, Mass.), who kept Monroe off the board until the 79th minute of play when sophomore midfielder Samantha Sansome scored. Just two minutes later sophomore forward Jordyn Ruston scored from in close to put Monroe up 3-0.

“Monroe was all over us today,” said CCRI head coach Dennis Grassini. “They are a very good talented team. They are technically and tactically strong and a very clean and physical type team. We only had a few chances all day today and we just couldn’t convert.”

In the previous game, CCRI defeated Dean 6-0, earning Grassini and associate head coach Kathy Bannan their 200th career victories.
