Knights suffer first Region loss at Massasoit Community College

The CCRI men’s basketball team traveled to Brockton, Mass. to take on the Warriors of Massasoit Community College in a Region XXI league showdown on Tuesday. The Warriors defeated the Knights 74-67 to raise their record to 3-6 in Region XXI and 1-1 in the league. With the loss, the Knights’ record drops to 6-3 overall and 6-1 in Region XXI and 1-1 in their league of Division II Region XXI.

The Knights took a 42-35 lead into halftime by playing great team basketball in the first half. The Warriors’ hot shooting in the second half erased a seven point half time deficit as they took their first lead of the game, 57-55, with 10 minutes left to play. Both teams battled hard for the remainder of the game, as the lead never got above three points for Massasoit. A couple of key turnovers hurt the Knights’ chances of taking the lead and forced them to have to foul. Massasoit hit their free throws to secure the win.

Leading the way for CCRI was Co-Captain Malieke Young (Providence, RI) with 21 points, including a game-high five 3-pointers with two assists and three rebounds. Young was helped by freshman Marshall Nelson (Perth, Australia), who scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers with two assists, while Co-Captain Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, CT) added 10 points, four assists and three steals for the Knights.

“We always expect our opponents to play their best game against us and tonight Massasoit did just that,” CCRI head coach Rick Harris said. “We played pretty good team basketball in the first half but didn’t get the ball inside like we wanted to in the second half and that hurt us. Credit Massasoit’s free throw shooting too. They were patient on offense and got good looks at the basket on most possessions.”

The next game for the Knights will be when they travel to Long Island City, NY on Saturday, December 6th to play LaGuardia Community College at 2 p.m.

Lady Knights beat

Gateway CC

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Lions of Gateway Community College from New Haven, CT on Tuesday evening for a Region XXI non-league game. The Lady Knights defeated the Lions 74-39. With the victory, the Lady Knights improved to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights controlled the game from the opening tip to take a 34-18 lead into halftime. The Lady Knights had contributions from all six players who were dressed with everyone getting into the scoring column in both halves. In the first half CCRI was led by sophomore Tri-Captain Jesse Ossian (Chandler, AZ), who scored 10, followed by freshman Lyric Artis (Albany, NY) with nine first half points, while tri-captain Amber Edwards (Boston, MA) added eight points to the Lady Knights’ first half attack. In the second half, CCRI increased its lead and coasted to the 74-39 victory.

Leading the way for CCRI was tri-captain Jesse Ossian with a tremendous stat line that included a double-double and game-highs in four categories—points with 17, rebounds with 12, assists with six and steals with five. Ossian was helped by tri-captain LaShana Tolliver (Albany, NY), who also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go with five assists and three blocked shots. Tianna Cruz (South Kingstown, RI), who got her first start of the season, just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Rounding out the CCRI attack was Lyric Artis with 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots, tri-captain Amber Edwards with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals and Yesenia Biascochea (Central Falls, RI) added six points with two 3-pointers.
