Kon: heavenly habachi & much more

Mike and Robin Miller have always enjoyed the fine restaurants in downtown Providence. Recently, they have been discovering that their hometown of East Greenwich has an equal variety of outstanding eating establishments, most located along the town’s Main Street.

Mike recently invited his in-laws and visiting niece to join them at Kon, a popular Asian bistro at 553 Main St., in the CVS Plaza. We were overwhelmed with the décor, friendly staff, attractive bar, tastefully decorated dining room and, oh yes, the food. The bar not only looks attractive with its pale blue lighting, the bartenders know how to make drinks, not always a plus in Asian restaurants. I stuck with my standard dry martini, and it was as good as it gets.

For appetizers, Robin suggested the Thai Crispy Chicken Wings ($7.50), which were perfectly cooked and garnished with unusual and tasty veggies. We also enjoyed Vietnamese Summer Rolls ($5), which were similar to Nim Chow but with a fine spicy chili sauce.

Kon is a true Asian bistro, with a huge sushi bar, wok and grill specialties, and traditional Asian dishes. Their trademark is the hibachi menu, which offers single items of chicken, shrimp, salmon, swordfish, scallops, filet mignon, twin lobster tail and calamari, ranging in price from $16-$32. The extra treat comes in combining two of those items ($22-$32).

The hibachi is served with a green salad with an incredible dressing, clear soup, the best hibachi fried rice we all savored, fresh veggies, and two pieces of hibachi shrimp. I chose salmon and scallop ($26). Joyce had shrimp and scallop ($26). Mike had chicken ($16).

All of our meals were served timely, piping hot and in huge portions. As we shared a bit, we couldn’t decide which we liked best.

If you are really hungry and ambitious, Kon has an Emperor’s Deluxe, which consists of filet mignon, lobster, shrimp and scallops for $39. Since Mike was treating, I couldn’t bring myself to ordering it…but I was tempted.

Granddaughter Tara is still very conservative in her dining habits and ordered the more traditional Pad Thai with chicken ($12). It was outstanding and too large a portion for her tiny appetite. We also coerced her into trying tiny bites of our selections, which she admitted she liked.

Robin went for her favorite Kon dish, Japanese teriyaki beef. (You can also order the dish with shrimp, chicken, or salmon). The chicken is delicately grilled with sweet teriyaki, asparagus, red pepper and steamed broccoli ($16). Kon has a separate hibachi room, sushi counter and private party room. They are open for lunch and dinner Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 9:30 p.m. And, of course, take-out.
