Lady Knights come up just short

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to New Rochelle, N.Y. to play the Mustangs of Monroe College. The Mustangs beat the Lady Knights 86-83. With the loss, CCRI fell to 13-6 on the year.

The Lady Knights knew they would be in for a tough battle after defeating Monroe in overtime at CCRI in mid-January, and the Mustangs were looking to exact some revenge on their home court. In the first half, Monroe jumped ahead of CCRI with a 12-point lead at 38-26. But the Lady Knights were able to close the halftime lead to seven points 42-35.

Early in the second half once again, Monroe extended its lead to 13 points with the score 52-39. The Lady Knights battled back and took their first lead of the game on a layup by Amber Edwards (Boston, Mass.), making the score 62-61. With about eight minutes left, the Lady Knights had their biggest lead of the game at 68-65 on another basket by Edwards. However Monroe’s size was too much for CCRI as it got some key baskets for its frontcourt on put-backs and extended its lead back to seven points. The Lady Knights tried to come back but their efforts fell short.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was captain Allexia Barros (New Bedford, Mass.), who scored a team-high 27 points, including five three-pointers, with five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Barros was helped by captain Ahnyyah Jackson (Hackensack, N.J.), who also had a big game with 26 points, including two three-pointers, five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Edwards had 15 points, six rebounds and two assists while Jess Patalano (Exeter) had nine points and three rebounds. Jesse Ossian (Chandler, Ariz.) added six points, eight assists and five rebounds.

Lady Knights Navigate past NAPS

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Rams of the Naval Academy Prep School (NAPS) for a game on Wednesday.  The Lady Knights cruised past the Rams by nearly 30 points, 81-54.

This was the second time the Lady Knights and Rams met this year, with CCRI pulling out a 73-65 win earlier in the season.  CCRI may have thought they would be in for an easier contest with NAPS playing without its top scorer Taylor Dunham, who scored 45 in their last meeting. However, NAPS came ready to play and jumped all over the Lady Knights with early leads of 11-2 five minutes into the game and 17-6 by the 12:45 mark.  Head coach Brittany Brown called a timeout to refocus her team and her message was received well. Over the next five minutes, the Lady Knights rallied back to tie the score 19-19 spurred on by Barros, who scored 11 points during that run, including three three-pointers.  Patalano sank two free throws with 5:51 left in the half to give CCRI its first lead on the game. The Lady Knights quickly extended the lead to five points at 26-21 with 4:15 left and kept that lead until halftime with the score 32-27.

In the second half, the Lady Knights played tremendous defense which led to easy baskets as they expanded the lead to 20 points at 55-35 by the 12:35 mark. They never looked back as they pulled away to win.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Jackson, who scored a team-high 22 points, including 18 in the second half, with two three-pointers, six assists and five steals. Barros had 20 points, 17 in the first half, with four three-pointers, two steals and two assists. Also having a big game for CCRI was Edwards with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Patalano added 15 points, including two three-pointers, with seven rebounds, and Ossian scored eight points with nine assists and eight rebounds, to go with five steals.
