Lady Knights comeback attempt comes up shy to Burlington County

Posted

On Saturday, the CCRI Lady Knights women’s soccer team hosted the Barons of Burlington County College of New Jersey for their 2014 home opener and fell 2-1. With the loss, the Lady Knights are now 1-1 on the season.

Early in the game, both teams played very evenly but late in the first half Burlington had the Lady Knights back on their heels.  In the 35th minute of play Burlington forward Allison Paonessa broke in all-alone on CCRI freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Kilburn (Norton, Mass.) and scored to the right corner of the goal on an assist from Allie Rabinowitz.   The first half of play ended with Burlington up 1-0.

As the second half of play began Burlington came out strong and forced the Lady Knights into a defensive shell and CCRI seemed to be totally out of sync. As the half progressed, Burlington’s Joan Logan scored an unassisted goal in the 59th minute, giving her team a 2-0 advantage.

The Lady Knights fought back hard but could not seem to find the net until sophomore midfielder Carla Porras (Narragansett) tallied on a scramble in front of the Burlington goal in the 84th minute of play, cutting the lead to 2-1.

Porras dribbled down the side and into the corner before sending the ball into the 18-yard box. After the pass she ran into the box and her effort was rewarded as the ball bounced back to her and she tied it passed the Burlington keeper Amber Steen.  The goal gave the Lady Knights some much-needed momentum and forced the Barons to make some defensive mistakes. And with just few minutes remaining in the match the Lady Knights turned-up the pressure on the Burlington goal.  Sophomore forward Ashley LeClair (Bradford, RI) had a point blank shot on goal in the waning minutes of the match, but Steen made a great save as she slid out and stopped the shot. With that save, Burlington held on to win 2-1.

“Burlington is a good team, but we had our chances to score and we did not make the most of our opportunities today,” said head coach Dennis Grassini. “Burlington deserves some credit though, as they outplayed us at different points in the match.  We got a bit rattled on defense today and we need to fix that going forward.”

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Sunday at 12 p.m. when they host the Wolverines of Essex County College from Essex, N.J. at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln.

Lady Knights volleyball goes 1-3 at Dragon Invite

The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to Howard Community College in Columbia, Md. to compete in the Howard Community College Dragon Invitational, where they went 1-3 to fall to 1-6 on the young season.

They lost their first match to Montgomery College 3-1, their second match to Harford 3-0 and their third match to CCBC-Essex 3-2 and they won their fourth match 3-0 over CCBC-Catonsville.

Match One

“One positive that did come out of this match was the ladies finally saw that they were not over their head and they could win,” said CCRI head coach Sam Amaral. “The girls fought hard and we were able to take one game from Montgomery.”

Statistically for CCRI captain Delyn Pizzaro (Homestead, Fla.) finished with 10 kills and two blocks, followed by freshman Ormarie Colon (Providence), who finished with 16 digs and an ace. Sarah Keomorokot (Pawtucket) had five kills and 17 digs while captain Lindsey Proulx (Warwick) had four kills, 17 digs and a block. Rounding out the CCRI attack was Emily Taylor (South Kingston) with 24 assists, an ace, three kills and 11 digs, Kayleigh Clauson (Wakefield) with 31 digs and an ace and Hannah Derefaka (West Warwick) with four blocks.

Match Two

Making things tough for CCRI was an injury to a frontline starter, which forced a substitution. Filling in was freshman Samantha Archambault (North Smithfield) who did well while gaining valuable experience and added two kills and two digs while Proulx finished with three kills, two aces and seven digs.

Match Three

“This game was a very stressful game to say the least,” said Amaral.

CCRI battled into a fifth game and nearly pulled off the win, but eventually fell 20-18 to come up just short.

Pizzaro finished with 10 kills, an ace and four blocks and Clauson had 29 digs and three aces. Keomorokot had eight kills and five aces, including three in the fifth game to even the score 11-11. Proulx had 18 digs and Taylor had 28 assists, three aces, six digs, and a block. Colon had 10 digs, a block and four aces.

Match Four

The Lady Knights, who were 0-6 on the season headed in, picked up their first victory in a three-game sweep

“It was awesome to see the Lady Knights pull through and take one before going home,” Amaral said. “The girls fought hard for this win.”

Taylor finished the game with 17 assists and six aces and Pizzaro had four blocks, two aces and six kills. Also helping CCRI to victory was Keomorokot with 19 digs and Colon with 11 digs and three aces.

Rounding out the CCRI effort was Clauson  with 14 digs and an ace, and Hannah Derefaka came in for the last two plays of the game and made it count, registering the final two points with a block and an emphatic kill.

“The Lady Knights learned a lot about themselves as each individual player and as a unit,” Amaral said. “We will now focus our attention on our match at New Hampshire Tech Wednesday.”

The results of that match, played in Concord, N.H., were unavailable at press time.
