The CCRI Lady Knights’ basketball team hosted the 2015 CCRI Basketball Invitational over the weekend. In their first game, they played the Cougars of Genesee Community College from Batavia, N.Y. The Lady Knights defeated the Cougars, 77-62.  With the victory, the Lady Knights improve to 4-13 on the season.

The Lady Knights played one of their best games of the season on Saturday versus the Cougars of Genesee. All six Lady Knights’ players made it into the scoring column, as they played tremendous team defense, while also sharing the ball on offense, which led to the victory.

Both teams traded baskets early, with Genesee taking a slim 8-7 lead on a 3-pointer from Elsa Anderson.

From there, tri-captain Jesse Ossian (Chandler, Ariz.) and freshman Lyric Artis (Albany, N.Y.) led the Lady Knights on a 33-12 run to close out the half.

Ossian sank four first-half 3-pointers to lead CCRI with 14 first-half points, while freshman Artis added 11 first-half points including two 3-pointers.

In the second half, the Lady Knights kept playing great team basketball to secure the 77-62 victory.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Lyric Artis with 24 points and five rebounds. Ossian added 21 points, including a game-high six 3-pointers with two assists and she also took a charge that helped change the momentum of the game in the first half. Ossian and Artis were helped by tri-captain LaShana Tolliver (Albany, N.Y.), who added 15 points and six rebounds, while Jennifer Cicero (West Greenwich, R.I.) had six points, six rebounds and three steals and Haley Beausoleil (Plainfield, Conn.) added four points, five assists and three rebounds.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Saturday, Jan. 17, when they host the Colts of Orange County Community College from Middletown, N.Y. at 1 p.m. at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse.

Lady Knights fall to Monroe College

The CCRI Lady Knights’ basketball team concluded play in the 2015 CCRI Basketball Invitational by playing the Mustangs of Monroe College from New Rochelle, N.Y. on Sunday. The Lady Knights lost to the Mustangs 82-53. With the loss, the Lady Knights fall to 4-14 on the season.

Early in the game, both teams traded baskets and Monroe had a slim 8-7 lead, but Beausoleil was fouled taking a 3-pointer and made all three free throws to give the Lady Knights a 10-8 lead.  From there, Monroe used its superior size and athleticism to close the half with a tremendous 42-25 run to take a 50-25 lead into halftime.

Though the outcome of the game was pretty much a forgone conclusion, to the Lady Knights’ credit they never quit and continued to play with passion and enthusiasm to try and cut into the Monroe lead. However, the Mustangs’ lead was too much to overcome, as they went on to win by the final count of 82-53.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was freshman guard Beausoleil, who scored a team-high 15 points, including two 3-pointers while adding three rebounds. Beausoleil was helped by Amber Edwards (Boston, Mass.), who had 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists and Ossian added 12 points, including two 3-pointers and three assists.

Knights fall to D-I power Monroe College

The CCRI Knights took on the Mustangs of Monroe College of New Rochelle, N.Y. in the second round of the 2015 CCRI Invitational. The Mustangs defeated the Knights, 69-58, to raise their record to 12-6. With the loss, the Knights’ record falls to 9-9 and 9-1 in Region XXI.

Monroe took a 28-20 lead into halftime after an evenly played first half. The Mustangs increased their lead to 14 points, 40-26, with 16:24 to go in the second half and got it up to 21 points, 62-41, with seven minutes left in the game. The Knights full-court pressure caused several turnovers and allowed the Knights to get the deficit down to 11 points, as the final horn sounded with the score 69-58.

The Knights were led by freshman sharp-shooter Marshall Nelson (Perth, Australia), who scored 20 points, including six 3-pointers, while adding six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sophomore Jerome Harris (Hartford, Conn.) scored 10 points with four steals. Freshman big man Mahda Brewah (Dover, Del.) chipped in with nine points.

“This was a gutsy performance by our team,” Knights’ head coach Rick Harris said. “We played a very good D-I team pretty well and matched their intensity throughout the game. We improved our defense from last night and we were able to push the ball in transition. We’ll use these last several games against D-I opponents to prepare for next week’s game at Globe Institute.”

The next game for the Knights will be Saturday, when they travel to New York, N.Y. to take on the Knights of Globe Institute at 2 p.m.
