Lady Knights fall in District E title game

The CCRI women’s soccer team’s season ended Sunday when it lost to defending national champion Monroe College, 7-0, in the NJCAA D-I District E title game. The win advances the defending champion Mustangs to the national tournament in Melbourne, Fla. The Lady Knights end the season with a record of 11-7.

Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the game, “We were totally outmatched today, but I’m so proud of our team for reaching the finals of the district. We don’t have a lot of bodies due to so many injuries and it’s tough to compete with such low numbers. However, our players gave it everything they had and they never gave up. Coach Bannan and I are very proud of them for their efforts.”

The Lady Knights currently have nine freshmen on the roster and hope to build on that group for a successful 2016 season.

The Lady Knights previously shut out Westchester Community College, 2-0, to set up a date in the finals with Monroe.

The first half of that game went scoreless and the Lady Knights were trying to find a rhythm after a two-week layoff from their last game. The second half proved to be different for the Lady Knights, though, as they didn’t wait long after the break to put one in the net. The goal came 45 seconds into the half when sophomore midfielder Catherine Lopes (Warren, R.I.) took a pass from freshman Elizabeth Gemmell (Warwick, R.I.) and snuck the shot past the goalkeeper to give the Lady Knights a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Knights’ duo struck again about 15 minutes later to give their team a 2-0 advantage. Gemmell fed Lopes again with a nice pass and Lopes was able to fire a shot to the top right of the net just past the outstretched goalie. The Lady Knights’ defense held strong and it was able to shut out the Skylanders for all 90 minutes of play.
