Lady Knights finish up slate with victory over Bunker Hill

Posted

The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team hosted the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill Community College form Boston for a Region XXI non-league game recently and won 4-0. CCRI improved to 8-4-1 overall and 5-0 in Region XXI play.

It was the final scheduled game for the Lady Knights and they celebrated with their fifth annual Pink Out and Sophomore Day.  As part of the Lady Knights’ Pink Out celebration, they have begun collecting a donations for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation, they have already collected nearly $500 and will continue collecting donations through the end of the month. In addition to the Pink Out, CCRI honored its sophomores: captain Lauren Cattani (Cranston), captain Stepheny Perez (Providence), Carla Porras (Narragansett), Ashley LeClair (Westerly) and Selena Canales (Cranston).

LeClair scored all four goals for CCRI. She scored her first goal with a header in the eighth minute of play, assisted by freshman forward Anete Encarnacao (Pawtucket). Then in the 34th minute on a very similar play, LeClair scored her second goal as she headed the ball into the BHCC net after receiving a beautiful cross from freshman midfielder Kendra Levesque (Warwick).

LeClair was at it again just three minutes into the second half, as Levesque connected again with another nice cross that LeClair was able to get a foot on. She was not done there, as with fifteen minutes left in the match freshman forward Kyanna Ivey-Jones (Pawtucket) took the ball deep into the Bunker Hill zone in the corner and crossed the ball in front, where LeClair banged in her fourth goal of the match.

“We had numerous scoring opportunities all day long and Ashley was certainly on her game today, scoring all four goals,” said head coach Dennis Grassini. “She was hungry and it certainly showed.”

The Lady Knights travel to Franklin, Mass. on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. to play their Region XXI rival Dean College for their final Region XXI contest of the year.

Roberts goal lifts Knights over Dean on Sophomore Day

In a must-win game to remain in playoff contention, the CCRI men’s soccer team got its biggest win of the year on Saturday afternoon, trumping conference-rival Dean College 1-0. With the win, the Knights improved to 4-8-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in Region XXI play.

A goal in the 24th minute from Knights’ leading scorer Junior Robert (Providence) was all it took, as CCRI keeper Alex Padilla (Cranston) turned aside all 10 shots on net in a spectacular effort. Defender Adam Coutu (Moosup, Conn.) also turned in a nearly flawless game on the back end, making life as easy as possible for Padilla.

“I’m very impressed with Adam’s poise and composure coming out of dangerous situations in the back,” said CCRI Head Coach Gabe Toro. “I love the way he predicts, intercepts and then comes out of the back with his head up and gives exact passes out of transition to his teammates going the other way. Playing with purpose and using other players as an extension of oneself is something I always encourage my players to do and Coutu exemplifies this technique in his play.”

Midway through the first half, the Knights were able to generate some offensive pressure, resulting in a great ball by Trevor Lopes (Cumberland) that Robert was able to head past the keeper for the game’s lone goal. Robert’s goal was his seventh of the season.

Getting a big win over their conference-rival was a great way to celebrate Sophomore Day for the student-athletes that have contributed so much time and effort to the men’s soccer program over the last two seasons. The sophomores are Robert, Coutu, Jean Arenas (Cranston), Chris Quinn (Cranston), Matt Bulmer (Dayville, Conn.), Joe McFarlane (Montego Bay, Jamaica), and Jossiemar Caballero (Johnston).

CCRI will be looking for its third straight win on Friday, when they host American International College’s junior varsity team at 3:30 p.m. at the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln. This will be the final game before the Region XXI playoff game the following weekend.

Ian Anderson (Warwick) led the Knights once again, with an overall finish of 91st out of 206 runners. Anderson finished the race in a time of 30 minutes 54 seconds, a personal-best for an 8k race. Jared Gruslin (North Smithfield) finished second for the Knights, placing 127th in a time of 32:50, while Joe Gareri (Uxbridge, Mass.) placed 160th in a time of 35:08.

The Knights will be back in action on Sunday when they compete in the Boston Mayors Cup, before hosting the CCRI Northeast Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln. The men will race at 10 a.m., while the women’s race is set for 11 a.m.

Lady Knights volleyball drops two in final match

The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to Rockville, Md. to play in a tri-match versus the Raptors of Montgomery College (Rockville) and the Catamounts of Potomac State College of WVU. The Lady Knights lost two very competitive matches: 2-3 versus Montgomery and 0-3 versus Potomac State. With the two losses, the Lady Knights end their season with a 6-21 overall record.

Match One

In games three and four Montgomery College came out playing with a vengeance, while the Lady Knights struggled to defend the opposing middle hitter, causing them to lose both games. At the beginning of game five, CCRI was close but still came up a little short.

“I am proud of our Lady Knights, especially Emily Taylor (South Kingstown) who was amazing behind the service line with seven aces while adding 39 assists, seven kills, 19 digs and a block,” said CCRI head coach Sam Amaral.

Also helping the Lady Knights was captain Delyn Pizzaro (Homestead, Fla.), who had 11 kills and three blocks, Hannah Derefaka (West Warwick), who had six kills, three digs and a block, captain Lindsey Proulx (Warwick), who had five assists, 13 kills and 24 digs and Sarah Keomorokot (Pawtucket), who had four aces, two assists, six kills and 20 digs.

Match Two

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Ormarie Colon (Providence), who had two aces, four kills and 14 digs. Pizzaro had five kills and two blocks. Also helping CCRI was Keomorokot, who had three kills and nine digs, while Kayleigh Clauson (Wakefield) had 15 digs.

“I have to say as a coach this year we had a tough go at it,” Amaral said. “However I am still very proud of each and every one of my girls. They came such a long way in such a short amount of time. The girls became family and feel back in love with this sport. You can’t coach passion but these last few games I was able to see the passion and fire they had for the CCRI Lady Knights.”
