The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team continued their play in the NHTI Invite on Saturday after an unbeaten showing pool play and went into the playoff round as the top seed. CCRI defeated Paul Smith’s College in the semifinals 25-7 and 25-15.

The Lady Knights then faced-off against host school NHTI in the finals and defeated it convincingly 25-14 and 25-10.  CCRI standouts Alyssa Salinas (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Omayra Corchado (Isabela, Puerto Rico) earn All-Tournament Team honors while CCRI captain Janny Cabrera (Providence) earns Tournament MVP.

“To see three of your players receive theses honors was a very proud moment,” CCRI head coach Samantha Amaral said. “These ladies practice very hard on and off the court.”

In the semifinals, Cabrera led the team with 10 kills and 2.5 blocks and Omayra Corchado added five kills, two aces, and eight digs in the match. Jincy Phann (Cranston), Chelsea O’Connor (Pawtucket) and Haley Greenwood (Goldsboro, N.C.) both had seven digs apiece, while O’Connor also added four aces. Corchado followed her teammate with eight kills and seven digs. Greenwood had two aces and nine digs. Salinas finished the match with 23 assists, an ace and five digs, O’Connor had two aces and two kills and Phann added four digs a block and an assist.

Bulldogs trip up Knights in region battle

The CCRI Knights’ men’s soccer team welcomed the Bulldogs of Dean College to the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln on Tuesday. The Knights lost to the Bulldogs 3-1. With the loss, the Knights fell to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in Region XXI play and 0-2 in their conference (Region XXI Division I).

The Knights were able to execute their gameplan for most of the first half. With 14:03 left in the first half, Junior Robert (Providence) headed a pass over the Dean back line where Freddie Korsah (Accra, Ghana) ran under it and into the 18-yard box through two Bulldog defenders and shot the ball around the Dean goalkeeper. Korsah’ s goal gave the Knights a 1-0 lead.

But with under three minutes left in the half, the Knights had a mental lapse that resulted in the equalizer scored by Javon Philip making the score 1-1.

In the second half, the Knights gave up a quick goal one minute into the half. This was a mental blow to the Knights and they were not able to recover. The Bulldogs capitalized on a foul outside the 18-yard box and ran a set play that landed on the foot of Kelvin Castillo, giving Dean the 2-1 lead. About 20 minutes into the second half, a bad clearance by the Knights’ defense resulted in a goal by Alex Bedrosian.

“You need to be more mentally resilient when they scored upon,” CCRI head coach Gabe Toro said. “Rob Gallucci (Coventry), had a great game in net and made some big saves in net for us. Overall, we showed we were able to compete with any team in Division I. Consistency for 90 minutes is our next goal.”

The Knights will have the opportunity to show this consistency when they host the Rams Springfield Technical Community College to Lincoln for another home game today at 4 p.m.

Lady Knights shut out Springfield Tech CC

The CCRI Lady Knight’s women’s soccer team traveled to Springfield, Mass. this past Saturday to take on the Rams of Springfield Technical Community College for a Region XXI non-conference game. The Lady Knights defeated the Rams 6-0. With the victory, the Lady Knights improved to 6-4-1 overall and 3-0 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights began to dominate the Rams right from the start of the match, pinning Springfield in their own half of the field, but the Lady Knights could not convert on the many opportunities that they created.

However, in the 20th minute of play, freshman Selena Canales (Cranston) gave CCRI its first goal of the day after taking a pass from freshman Stepheny Perez (Providence). Just two minutes later, sophomore midfielder Melissa Richards (Coventry) scored off of a corner kick on a rare two-assist play with Stepheny Perez and sophomore Jen Kittila (Warwick) picking up the assists.

Six minutes later, freshman forward Carla Porras (Narragansett) scored on yet another assist from Perez, her third assist of the half. Perez sent Porras in all alone on a breakaway for the Lady Knights third goal of the half.

Up 3-0 at the half, CCRI continued its onslaught on the Rams as Canales connected on her second goal of the afternoon on a pass from Porras, giving the Lady Knights a commanding 4-0 lead.

Just three minutes later, Canales and Porras combined again for CCRI making the score 5-0, as Canales picked up her third goal of the match.

With ten minutes left in the match, Kittila scored an unassisted goal on a Springfield turnover for the final goal of the game.

Sophomore captain goalkeeper Alex Place (East Greenwich) recorded her second consecutive shutout victory, her third on the season.

The Lady Knights’ next two matches will be in Rochester, N.Y. this weekend as they take on two nationally ranked powers. On Saturday at 1 p.m. the Lady Knights face No. 4 Navarro College from Texas and on Sunday at 12 p.m. they will face No. 5 Monroe Community College.
