The CCRI Lady Knights women’s soccer team traveled to Bel Air, Md., to take on the No. 12 ranked (NJCAA D-I poll) Fighting Owls of Harford Community College. The Lady Knights held off a late charge from the Fighting Owls to win, 3-2.

With the victory, the Lady Knights begin the season 2-0.

The Lady Knights came out strong and scored in the 14th minute of play when sophomore forward Kyanna Ivey-Jones (Pawtucket, R.I.) broke through the Harford defense and scored low and to the corner. Just 14 minutes later, Ivey-Jones converted again on a beautiful cross from freshman forward Ashley Van Bemmelen (North Providence, R.I.), giving CCRI a 2-0 advantage at the half.

As the second half began, the Lady Knights wasted no time scoring again as sophomore midfielder Catherine Lopes (Warren, R.I.) converted on a pass from sophomore co-captain  Kendra Levesque (Warwick, R.I.), giving CCRI a commanding 3-0 lead.

However, the 12th ranked Fighting Owls never gave up. Harford scored on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, making the score 3-1. Both teams continued to fight back and forth throughout. With just three minutes remaining in the match, Harford struck again as the Owl’s Angela Kuhn scored on a header off of an Abbie Springer corner kick, making the score 3-2 and putting them right back into the game.

However, they would run out of time with the Lady Knights taking home the hard-fought, 3-2 victory.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be their home opener next Sunday, August 30 at 12 p.m., when they will host Montgomery College, from Montgomery, Md., at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln.

Lady Knights win season opener

The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team traveled to the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) in La Plata, Md., for their 2015 season opener. The Lady Knights defeated the Lady Hawks, 3-0. With the victory, CCRI moved to 1-0 to start the season.

CCRI dominated the first half of play, but it just could not find the back of the net. The Lady Knights missed on several quality scoring opportunities as both teams went into the break knotted 0-0.

In the second half, the Lady Knights came out strong and continued to dominate the Lady Hawks. In the 20th minute of the second half, CCRI finally got on the scoreboard as freshman midfielder Samantha Canales (Cranston, R.I.) scored on a nice pass from Levesque. Three minutes later, Levesque also tallied an unassisted goal as she stole a pass from a Lady Hawks’ defender and placed the ball in the lower left corner of the net to give the Lady Knights a 2-0 advantage.

In the 36th minute of the second half, DellaVentura broke through two CSM defenders for a breakaway and finished by chipping the ball over the head of the Lady Hawks’ keeper to give CCRI a 3-0 lead. Sophomore co-captain goalkeeper Jenn Kilburn (Norton, Mass.) charted a shutout in her first game of the 2015 Lady Knights’ campaign.

Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the victory: “Coach Bannan and I are very pleased with our team’s play today. Because this was our first time on the field as one unit, we really didn’t know what to expect. They did everything we asked of them and they played with a lot of heart and passion. Everyone worked hard today.”
