The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team hosted the Avengers of ASA College for a match on Tuesday. The Lady Knights lost to the Avengers 1-0. With the loss, the Lady Knights fell to 0-4 on the season.

There were two lightning delays before the game got started, forcing both teams to head for shelter and re-warm-up, but after natures light show there was still plenty of electricity on the field as both teams stormed up and down the field trying to take and early advantage. Both teams had chances to score but they went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

In the second half, both teams once again were trying to get the upper hand. The Lady Knights had a few chances on set pieces from captain Betti Worth (Manchester, England) but could not convert those opportunities into goals. In addition, captain goalkeeper Alex Place (East Greenwich) was a wall in the net, making athletic save after athletic save. With about five minutes left, CCRI had another fine opportunity to score after a corner from Jessica Hammond (Warwick) was sent into the six-yard box deflecting off multiple players. Captain Paige Oram (Burrillville) got off a shot from inside the 18-yard box that just missed the net wide right.

A moment later, ASA cleared the ball out of their area got the ball to the foot of Brazilian forward Fabiana Alborghetti who got a step on a CCRI defender leaving her one-on-one with a charging Place. Alborghetti slipped the ball past her, giving ASA a 1-0 lead with just 4:02 remaining in the game. That’s how the game ended.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Sunday at 12 p.m. when they will host the Vikings of Mercer County Community College from West Windsor Township, N.J. at the CCRI Soccer Complex on the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln.

Palkovic Paces Knights at Mayflower Kick-Off race

Select members of the CCRI Cross Country Team traveled to Henniker, N.H. to compete in the Mayflower Kick-Off Invitational at New England College.  CCRI did not have a complete team on the men’s or women’s side but did compile some strong individual performances.

Leading the way for the Knights was David Palkovic (Middletown), who placed 10th out of 123 runners with an impressive time of 17 minutes 9 seconds over the 5k course. It was Palkovic’s first ever top-10 finish at a college cross country race. He was followed by freshmen Britton Laney (Pascoag), who placed 73rd in a fine time of 20:31. Laney was followed by Joseph Gareri (Uxbridge, Mass,) who placed 92nd in a time of 21:38.

Sophomore Meaghan Shanley (Warwick) was the only CCRI Lady Knight who raced, and she placed 115th in the women’s 5k with a time of 30:43.
