The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team has enjoyed tremendous success early this season.

The Lady Knights have a perfect 3-0 record following victories over No. 20 ranked Harford, which was No. 12 when it met CCRI, College of Southern Maryland and Montgomery College, which were all from the state of Maryland.

This week the Lady Knights received some additional good news, as they returned to the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Poll ranked at No. 15. CCRI returns to the NJCAA National Poll for the first time since September of 2012.

Knights lose battle against Bunker Hill

CCRI’s men’s soccer team played their second game of the season on Wednesday when they hosted the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill Community College on the Lincoln Campus Field. The Knights played a hard-fought game, but failed to come away with the victory, taking a loss by the score of 2-1. The loss put the Knights at 1-1 on the year, while dropping their Region XXI record to 0-1.

The Knights came out strong and took the first lead of the game with a goal from Josh Sandin (Warwick, R.I.). Sandin was assisted on the goal by sophomore tri-captain Nate DaCosta (Warwick, R.I.). The Knights had many other opportunities to score while they were up, but failed to do so. The game took a huge turning point when the Knights lost arguably their two best defenders to injuries, one being sophomore tri-captain Brandon Iannelli (North Kingstown, R.I.).

The team played well, but after two defenders for the Knights were injured, the defense took some time to readjust.

The Knights faced the challenge of making mid-game adjustments on defense, with players who don’t normally play on the back end filling in.

Bunker Hill did not waste the opportunity given to it, tying the game in the second half. Head Coach Gabe Toro said “The defense was not the same (after Iannelli went down), and some other key injuries in the middle of the field made it difficult for us to regain the control we had in the first half.”

At the 40-minute mark, Bunker Hill was able to slip by the back line and score, taking a 2-1 lead with little time left.

Toro stated that “When we get a lead, teams need to be finished off by scoring and not wasting chances because teams find ways to stay in games, and the longer they hang around, the more difficult it becomes to finish them off.”

He also added that he saw many good things during this game from his team; they just need to capitalize on chances when they present themselves.
