Lady Knights soccer team volunteers at Franklin Farm

Posted

On Monday, Aug. 12, the 2013 CCRI women’s soccer team volunteered to pick vegetables and produce at the Franklin Farm in Cumberland, R.I.

Every year the Lady Knights do a community service event and this year one of the Lady Knights’ captains, Alex Place (East Greenwich), brought the idea of going to the volunteer farm to pick food for this important charitable cause. Franklin Farm is associated directly with the Rhode Island Food Bank and all of the fresh vegetables go directly to the food bank.

Everyone and everything to do with this farm is strictly on a voluntary basis. The Lady Knights spent in excess of two hours picking over 400 pounds of summer squash, zucchini, eggplant, cucumbers, and tomatoes. In addition, every team member and the coaching staff also collected and brought canned goods and many other food items to donate to the food bank.

“It was a great day. Everyone had fun working for this important cause and it also helped in team bonding and building as everyone had a great time,” CCRI head coach Dennis Grassini said.
