No. 3 Monroe College beats Lady Knights

The CCRI Lady Knights’ soccer team hosted the No. 3 Mustangs of Monroe College from New Rochelle, N.Y. Saturday and lost 5-0.  With the loss, the Lady Knights fell to 7-4-1 on the season.

In the previous game, CCRI defeated Massasoit Community College 4-1.

Things didn’t start out the way CCRI would have liked, as Monroe was awarded a corner kick in the first minute of play.   CCRI goalkeeper Jenn Kilburn (Norton, Mass.) made the initial save, but the ball got away as conditions were wet and slippery.  The Mustangs’ Melanie Formosa was right there to tuck in the rebound, giving Monroe a quick 1-0 advantage. Ten minutes later Gabriella Braga got loose in the CCRI 18-yard box and scored Monroe’s second goal of the match. Braga duplicated her efforts ten minutes later, giving Monroe a commanding 3-0 halftime advantage.

As second half play began, the Mustangs continued to dominate play. In the 23rd minute of play, Monroe’s Gemma Craine was taken down from behind in the CCRI box, prompting the referee to award a penalty kick. Kilburn once again made the initial stop on Craine’s shot but the ball rebounded right back to Craine, who placed the ball into the CCRI net. That made the score 4-0. With about eight minutes left in the match, Monroe’s Lina Dominguez rounding out the scoring with the Mustang’s fifth goal on the day.

“By far this is the best team we have seen this season,” said CCRI head coach Dennis Grassini. “We knew going in that this was going to be a very tough match for us today. The only bright spot we had today was Jenn Kilburn stopping the penalty shot, but unfortunately for her and our team the ball came out straight back to the kicker.

The next game for the Lady Knights is today at home against the Pride of Springfield College JV at 4 p.m. at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln.

Kilburn named NJCAA National Goalkeeper of the week

One of the big reasons for the success of the CCRI women’s soccer team so far this season is freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Kilburn (Norton, Mass.). Due to her play, she has been named National junior College Athletic Association National Goalkeeper of the week for the week of September 29-October 5.

Kilburn, who has started all 12 games in net for the Lady Knights, had an excellent week, allowing just one goal in three victories for the Lady Knights. On Oct. 1 she led the Lady Knights past Springfield Tech and she earned her fourth shutout of the year with an 8-0 victory.

From there, Kilburn recorded another critical shutout versus Mercer County Community College in a 0-0 double overtime thriller. She capped her week with a 2-1 victory over Essex County College.

For the year Kilburn is ranked No. 14 in the nation in total saves with 90 and 21st in the nation with a .891 save percentage. In addition, Kilburn’s five shutouts rank her No. 10 in the nation.

She also has a .97 goals against average, ranking her No. 41 in the nation.

The last CCRI keeper to earn NJCAA National Goalkeeper of the week honors was Melody Lawrence who earned the distinction in October of the 2009 season.

“We are so happy and pleased that Jenn has received such recognition, especially on a national basis,” said CCRI head coach Dennis Grassini. “She has come up big all season long.  She has a lot of talent, and she’s only going to get better.”

Knights surrender three second-half goals in loss

The CCRI men’s soccer team surrendered three goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half to fall to Region XXI foe Massasoit Community College, 3-0, on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Knights fell to 2-8-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in Region XXI play.

CCRI came out playing its best half of the season against an offensive-minded Massasoit team. Head coach Gabe Toro made some adjustments in the lineup to increase ball possession and to create a more stable defensive foundation. In the opening half, the Knights’ back line of Brandon Iannelli (North Kingstown), Chris Quinn (Cranston) and Adam Coutu (Moosup, Conn.) all put in a great effort. CCRI and Massasoit took a 0-0 tie into the half.

However, the Knights weren’t able to sustain their intensity in the opening moments of the second half, allowing Joel Lobo, Massasoit’s leading scorer, to get in behind the defense all alone to make it a 1-0 game. Less than five minutes later, Massasoit was at it again. This time it was Pepe Vieira collecting the ball and burying it into the back of the net to give Massasoit a 2-0 lead. Manny Fortes added a goal in the 70th minute for the Warriors to make it 3-0.

“The team has the ability to be dangerous, but they’ve had trouble keeping it consistent throughout 90 minutes of play,” Toro said. “We continue to improve in this area, but hopefully we can keep the intensity and focus for 90 minutes in the next game of the season.”
