The Warwick girls’ hockey team’s state title defense got off to a rocky start on Friday night, as the Lady Titans fell 7-0 to defending state runner-up La Salle.

Warwick knocked off the Rams in consecutive games to win the championship a season ago, but this weekend La Salle blitzed the undermanned Lady Titans for two goals in the second period and then five in the third, turning it into a blowout.

Michaela McNamara paced the Rams with a pair of goals, while five other players found the back of the net. Victoria Hartley turned aside all 12 of Warwick’s shots to pick up the shutout.

In goal for the Lady Titans, Erin Vermilye made 32 saves.

La Salle went on to defeat South Country 7-1 the next night to jump into the early drivers’ seat in the state, with a 2-0 mark, tied for first place with Barrington/Mt. Hope/Portsmouth.

Warwick, meanwhile sits at 0-1 and plays its second game of the season on Wednesday against South Country. That game is at 8:30 p.m. at URI’s Boss Arena.
