Land of the free

It was a fitting location and a fitting tribute to veterans yesterday, as Veterans Memorial High School staged a flag raising and ceremony outside the school yesterday morning.

Readings were given by students Chris Smith and Hannah Ellis. Michelle Spremulli placed a wreath at the circle in front of the school. The school’s chorale sang the National Anthem.

In closing remarks, Ed Kimmerlein, social studies department chair, talked about the anthem and the last line, “And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave/o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!”

“We, the citizens of United States, are the free,” he said. “The veterans, who have fought to preserve our freedom, are the brave. And for that bravery we need to be thankful, not just on Veterans Day but every day, for we are Warwick Veterans Memorial High School.”

A wreath laying ceremony conducted by the Warwick Veterans Council will take place again today – Veterans Day – at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park next to the school.
