Posted

The late publisher of the Rhode Island Pendulum, a retired executive editor of the Providence Journal, and the former longtime sports information director at the University of Rhode Island have been elected to the Rhode Island Press Association Hall of Fame.

They will be formally inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Press Association’s annual awards dinner on Friday, May 2 at the Quonset “O” Club in North Kingstown.

The inductees are:

William “Bill” Foster, late owner and editor of the Rhode Island Pendulum in East Greenwich, who made the paper a strong voice in the affairs of towns in his circulation area.

Thomas E. Heslin, who guided the investigative team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 1994 for exposing corruption in the Rhode Island court system and was a Pulitzer finalist in 2004 for its coverage of the disastrous Station nightclub fire. Heslin was also a leader in the fight to preserve First Amendment rights in New England.

James B. Norman, retired sports information director at URI, who over the years received more than 60 major awards for his work in broadcasting and sports information.

The May 2 awards dinner is open to the public. Besides the Hall of Fame inductions, awards will be presented to Rhode Island journalists for outstanding work as reporters, photographers and editors. The evening will begin with cocktails at 6 and dinner at 7. The Quonset “O” Club is at 200 Lt. James Brown Road on the former Quonset Point Navy base. For information on attending, contact the Press Association treasurer, Nancy Kirsch, at NKirsch@shalomri.org.
