Gina Russo, a Station fire survivor and chair of the Station Fire Memorial Foundation, has been honored by the Rotary Club of Warwick for her leadership. She was presented the Hayden Bentley Award June 16. The award is given annually in memory of Bentley, a charter member of the club in 1949 who went on to become a Rotary District Governor. Russo, who works at Rhode Island Hospital as an outpatient representative, is spearheading the drive to build the memorial to the 100 people who lost their lives in the nightclub fire on Feb. 20, 2003. Working with former Governor Donald Carcieri and his wife, Sue, as co-chairs, the foundation has raised more than $1.7 million of its $2 million goal. Work on the memorial has started and is scheduled to be completed by this fall. Warwick Rotary Club member Tom Celona, made the presentation. In his comments, Celona, chair of the award committee, said Russo’s “efforts will bring some closure to this tragic chapter in Rhode Island history while properly remembering those who died.”
