Legends: great pub and grub

Ricky Higham Jr. and his girlfriend Erica have been working since April to convert the former Christopher’s into a first class “Pub and Grub.” Legends, at 1458 Park Ave. in Cranston, is the cornerstone for an attractive mini-mall that houses a gluten-free bakery, salon and day care facility.

Ricky worked in the biotech industry for the past 10½ years but has always wanted to run a pub. A month ago, he completed renovations, creating a warm, comfortable environment where patrons can enjoy a drink at the 10-seat bar, a meal at one of the 10 tables, a party in the function room, or lunch or dinner outside.

“I’m a real sports nut,” Ricky said, “but I didn’t want to create another sports bar. I’ve got some great sports photos (Check out the one with Ted Williams and Babe Ruth) and memorabilia on the walls, and we’ll have sports on our TV, plus a pool table, but we’re emphasizing good food and drink.”

Ricky plans to expand his menu, but presently he offers an eclectic array of hearty bar food, or “grub,” as he calls it.

The most popular appetizer on the menu is the fried pickle slices ($5.95), a generous serving of fresh, lightly battered dill pickles that go perfectly with one of their 16 beers on tap.

Salads, half-pound burgers made with Angus beef, Hebrew National all-beef kosher hot dogs, grilled pizzas and a variety of sandwiches and fries make up the “pub and grub” menu.

“I plan to expand the menu,” Ricky said, “but I’m not going to compete with the Italian restaurant across the street and the best corned beef sandwich around the corner.”

Legends fills a need for businesspeople and families in the area who want a tasty, quick lunch and the many former Christopher’s regulars who stop in for a drink after work.

“We’re keeping many of the former customers, while new people are discovering us and like the pleasant atmosphere, food and drink,” he said.

I couldn’t decide between the specialty hot dogs and burgers, so I ordered a Boston Baked Bean Burger ($8.99), an unusual combination that will have me returning for another.

A half-pound of Angus beef is topped with thinly sliced hot dogs and baked beans. I’m surprised I never thought of that. Accompanied by fries and dill pickles, it is one tasty treat.

Joyce couldn’t resist the Mac & Cheese Burger ($8.99), piled high with mac and cheese that oozed out onto the plate, requiring a fork to capture every last bite.

Specialty hot dogs include toppings of sauerkraut, Philly cheese steak, chili and guacamole and salsa, ranging in price from $4.99 to $7.49…a bargain with the added pickles and fries.

Legends Pub and Grub is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Future plans call for karaoke, bands and other sports activities. The function room is available for parties, and catering and takeout are available.

I've stopped in a couple times and the place is great. Great speciality beers and Ricky and Erica are great hosts. I'll be back!!
