The weather cooperated and the volunteers turned out by the scores as Hendricken High School hosted the Southern Area Games of the Special Olympics Saturday on school grounds. The regional games lead up to the State Summer games to be held May 30 to June 1 at the University of Rhode Island. Nearly 1,600 athletes and coaches from across the state will participate in this event, featuring competitions in Athletics (track & field), Aquatics, Bowling, Cycling, MATP (motor activities training program), Powerlifting and Unified Soccer. Competition begins at noon on May 30 with Opening Ceremonies at 7:30 p.m., highlighting the Flame of Hope being carried into Mead Stadium by members of Police, Fire, Corrections, State Troopers and FBI personnel. The Games conclude Sunday, June 1 at 12 p.m., wrapping up a weekend’s worth of incredible competition and well-deserved victories. All events are free and open to the public to cheer athletes on to victory. The 2014 USA games will be held in New Jersey from June 14 to June 21.
