Letterle tied for third after day one at nationals

The CCRI Knights co-ed golf team is competing at the Division III Golf Nationals at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, N.Y. this week. The four-day Championship began Tuesday.  Leading the way for the Knights was the Region XXI medalist Steven Letterle (Cranston) who shot a team-low 73, the best score for a CCRI golfer in recent history at the Division III Golf National Championship. After the first day, the Knights’ team is in 13th place out of 13 teams with a team score of 366. The leading team in the Championship is Cincinnati State Technical Community College (CSTCC) with a team-low score of 300.  Individually leading the Championship is Matt Nickoson from CSTCC with a score of 71.

Letterle’s 73 began with a 38 on the front nine and ended with a 35 on the back nine. He is in a five-way tie for third place.  Letterle would have been tied for first with a 71 if not for a double-bogey on whole nine, which played very tough on the first day. The ninth hole is a 424-yard par four that averaged a 4.84 per golfer on the day, nearly one stroke above par.

Letterle was followed by captain Gina Bartolotta (Wakefield) who shot a first round 89 with a 44 on the front nine and 45 on the back nine, tying her for 66th place. Bartolotta was followed by captain Zach Sullivan (Cumberland), who shot a 97 with a 50 on the front nine and 47 on the back nine. Rounding out the Knights’ golfers was Chris Lussier (Cranston), who shot a 107, with a 49 on the front nine and 58 on the back nine.

The Knights teed off on Wednesday morning for round two, with results unavailable at press time.

CCRI Baseball Alumni Roundup

Former CCRI catcher Tom Gavitt has had an outstanding senior season at Bryant University. The Bulldogs are currently 40-14 and Gavitt has been a main contributor. The North Stonington, Connecticut native currently has a .328 average, to go along with six home runs and 29 RBI. For his efforts this season, Gavitt has earned All-Northeast Conference Second Team and All-New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Second Team. Bryant is the first team in Northeast Conference history to record back-to-back 40-win seasons.

In his first year at URI, Mike Sherburne has led the Rams in several offensive categories. Although URI has had a down year, Sherburne has 20 runs scored, two home runs, four triples, and 11 steals—all team highs, to go along with a .255 batting average.

Nick Coro played some infield and outfield this season for Central Connecticut State University, playing in 26 games. The Providence native compiled a .241 average and four runs scored.

Division II

Former Knights Conor Gleason and John Razzino led Franklin Pierce University to a 35-18 season. The Ravens were ousted by Stonehill in the first round of the Northeast-10 Tournament, but earned the two-seed in the East Regional. There, Franklin Pierce lost a pair of games to Dowling College and Felician College to be eliminated.

Just like he was at CCRI, Gleason was the Ravens’ ace this year. The righty was second in the conference with 95 strikeouts in just 63 innings pitched and compiled a 5-3 record and a 2.71 ERA. Gleason was an All-Northeast-10 First Team selection and was also tabbed an American Baseball Coaches Association and a Daktronics Second Team All-East Region selection.

Razzino earned All-Northeast-10 Third Team honors for his offensive output this season. The speedy right fielder led the Ravens in RBI (34), steals (45) and walks (23). He also hit four home runs and finished the year with a .264 batting average.
