Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to host Light The Night Walk at McCoy

Posted

Participants in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2014 Light The Night Walk will rally their forces on Sept. 27 at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket.

Light The Night Walk is a fundraising campaign of LLS that brings together families and communities to honor blood cancer survivors, as well as those lost to the diseases, and shine a light on the importance of finding cures and providing access to treatments for blood cancer patients.

Each year, in communities all across the United States and Canada, friends, families and co-workers form fundraising teams, and millions of consumers help by donating at retail outlets. These efforts culminate in inspirational, memorable evening walks in nearly 200 communities each fall across North America. These events bring help and hope to patients and their families battling blood cancer and let them know they are not alone in their battle against cancer.

The funds raised by Light The Night participants will help advance more breakthrough therapies for blood cancer patients, like targeted therapies that zero in on cancer cells and kill them and immunotherapies that use a patient’s own immune system to kill cancer.

Participants of all ages are welcome. Through your fundraising efforts, you’ll be helping hundreds of thousands of blood cancer patients. And you will enjoy a fun, family-friendly event with music, refreshments and entertainment.

Light The Night participants raise an average of $240 nationally to support the fight against blood cancers. Be a Champion For Cures by raising $100 or more and receive a commemorative Light The Night T-shirt, a wristband for refreshments at the event and our exclusive illuminated lantern to let your accomplishment shine brightly throughout the walk.

During this leisurely walk, participants who raise $100 or more carry illuminated lanterns – red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer. Thousands of walkers – men, women and children – form a community of caring, bringing light to the dark world of cancer. All patients and survivors carry white lanterns and are not required to fundraise.

Raise $1,000 or more to become a member of our Bright Lights Club. Together, Bright Lights Club members raised more than $18 million last year in support of our mission. Join the club that is funding cures today and you will also receive special recognition for your tremendous impact.

LLS, based in White Plains, N.Y., is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. Funds raised from Light The Night provide significant support to these programs. In 2013, the Rhode Island walk included approximately 2,500 walkers who collectively raised $230,000. Nationally, Light The Night raised nearly $60 million in 2013. Rhode Island’s 2014 walk goal is $300,000, and with your help we will get there.
