Liam Tobin plays Carol King’s husband in ‘Beautiful’

Canadian actor Liam Tobin has played a variety of interesting characters on the musical comedy stage. Among them are Tony in “West Side Story,” Buddy the Elf in “Elf,” Joseph in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Overcoat” and Joe Hardy in “Damn Yankees.”

“Carol King’s husband Gerry Goffin is one conflicted guy,” Liam told me. “He has an abundance of charisma paired with a heavy dose of doubt, which makes for an amazing mix of talent and discord. He makes a lot of mistakes along the way. He’s a joy to play.”

Tobin has lit up the Toronto theatre stages after getting the acting bug in the ninth grade in his native Newfoundland after following his buddies who were in a school play and going on to Sheridan College before landing a role in “The Sound of Music” in Toronto.

“Life’s been good,” he said. ”I’ve had the opportunity to travel and ‘Beautiful’ will take us from Providence to Durham, to Washington D.C [The Kennedy Center], Chicago for three months and then back east to Boston.”

Once again the Providence Performing Arts Center has scored a victory in bringing in a blockbuster Broadway hit three weeks ahead of opening its national tour in major cities across the country.

After three weeks of rehearsals, technical checks and blocking out the show on the stage of what Liam called “one of the most beautiful theatres I have ever been in,” “Beautiful” opened Tuesday night and will run through Sunday, September 20.

If you haven’t heard “Beautiful-The Carole King Musical” tells the true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being a part of a hit songwriting team with her husband, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to become one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history.

The Tony and Grammy-Award winning musical was a major hit on Broadway and tickets have been selling fast for its Providence production. Call 421-ARTS for reservations.
