There are four gospels in the Bible, but many more were written. Join author, instructor and pastor Stephen Finlan for a two-part lecture series on gospels not in the Bible at Warwick Public Library on Tuesdays, October 25 and November 1 at 7 p.m.
Some gospels were written for Jewish Christians. Others were composed for Gnostic believers, and some were created to fill-in the gaps in the gospel story.
On October 25, learn about the proto-gnostic "Gospel of Thomas." On November 1, find out about the narrative-completing "Secret Book of James" and the gnostic "Gospel of Mary."
Stephen Finlan is the author of "The Family Metaphor in Jesus' Teachings," "The Apostle Paul and the Pauline Tradition" and "Sacrifice and Atonement: Psychological Motives and Biblical Patterns." He is an adjunct professor at Providence College and pastor at Plainfield Congregational Church in Connecticut.
