Library's best summer reads

Hoping to get adults in on the summer reading fun, the Warwick Public Library kicked off its second annual Adult Summer Reading Challenge last week.

“We wanted to make sure there was some sort of summer reading program for adults that wanted to participate,” said Wil Gregersen, community services librarian.

The challenge is the brainchild of library director Diane Greenwald and Gregersen, who wanted a program for their adult patrons and designed the challenge to fit that need.

Those who wish to participate can first fill out a sign-up form online or at the library. Then, each time the participant finishes a book, they fill out an entry form and submit it. There are weekly drawings for $25 gift cards, donated from local businesses, and a grand prize drawing on Aug. 2 for an Amazon Kindle donated by Friends of the Warwick Library. All drawings occur at noon each Friday until Aug. 2.

All entry forms submitted to the library throughout the duration of the Challenge will be placed in the grand prize drawing.

“It’s been good,” said Gregersen about sign-ups during the first week. He said the winner of the first week’s drawing had read five books, resulting in five entries for the drawing. “We didn’t want to leave anyone in the community out if they wanted to participate in a summer reading challenge.”

While the children and teen summer reading programs have set goals (reading for 20 minutes a day and three hours a week, respectively), the adult reading challenge goals are completely individualized. Participants can read any books they wish and however many they have time for. If one is an avid reader, you could make your goal to be multiple books each week. If one is trying to get back into reading, the goal may be to read just one book for the whole summer.

“The challenge is totally individual. If you can only read one book this summer, that is your challenge,” said Gregersen, who said the challenge is great because it can be altered to everyone’s individual summer schedules.

Gregersen said he and the rest of the staff is thankful for the support for the program’s second year.

“We are so very, very grateful to the businesses that have donated prizes,” said Gregersen. “It is a pure donation on the part of the business and it is support for the library and reading.”

Local businesses that donated prizes are Carol’s Country Corner, Dave’s Marketplace, Don’s Pizza Restaurant, Le Favorite Bakery and Picasso’s Pizza, as well as the Friends of the Warwick Library, a volunteer organization that raises money to support various library programs.
