‘Lincoln Portrait’ comes to life March 31 at CCRI

The Community College of Rhode Island will welcome actor, director and playwright Rob Dimmick to present “A Lincoln Portrait,” a play based on the writings and reflections of Abraham Lincoln, at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31, in the Bobby Hackett Theater at the Knight Campus, 400 East Ave., Warwick. The event is free and open to the public.

Dimmick, a Providence resident, has toured the country to present the one-man performance since 1983. Historians at Brown University and the Naval War College and re-enactors throughout New England regard his portrayal of Lincoln as one of the most authentic in the nation.

Dimmick, who holds a master’s degree in integrated arts from Plymouth State University, has the unique distinction of being a guest curator at Brown University’s John Hay Library, endowed by Abraham Lincoln’s personal secretary. He has curated exhibits on Lincoln, Langston Hughes, Lydia Maria Child and Rhode Island slavery.

In addition to his work as a curator, Dimmick is co-producer of the award-winning Educational Theatre Collaborative at Plymouth State. He has taught master classes in musical theater styles, auditioning techniques and cabaret at Brown University, Plymouth State, the Providence Performing Arts Center and other sites throughout New England.

He is co-founder of Jazz is a Rainbow, a vocal performance project based in Providence that teaches the jazz songbook to urban youth in collaboration with international musicians Lynne Jackson and Michael Palter and musicians from Berklee College of Music and the Newport Jazz Festival.

Dimmick has devoted his professional career to grooming young talent for the stage in his Kabaret venue at KAT Company, a summer theater camp in New Hampshire. Several of his students have gone on to highly successful careers, including Academy Award-nominated actress and Rhode Island native Viola Davis.
