Lions edge Pilgrim in battle for first
MOLLY LYNCH

The Pilgrim girls’ soccer team had passed every test so far through the season’s first half but suffered its first loss of the year on Thursday in Division II’s biggest game thus far.

The Pats lost to Lincoln 1-0 in a battle of division leading, 6-0-1 teams. They were the final two unbeatens in the division.

Lincoln got the game’s only goal in the 21st minute, when Pilgrim goalie Hannah Page stopped a shot from Maya LaFluer, only to have the rebound go right to Lauren Amaral, who knocked it in.

Page made 11 saves on the day to keep it a one-goal game, but the Pats couldn’t find an answer for Lincoln goalie Lauren Hervieux, despite numerous chances. She finished with eight saves.

The division got a little more crowded near the top with Pilgrim’s loss, as the team dropped into a tie for third-place with Scituate at 6-1-1. Both teams have 19 points. Lincoln leads the division with its 7-0-1 record and 22 points, while Burrillville is second with 21 points at 7-2. Pilgrim and Scituate have each played one fewer game than Burrillville however, and would hop the Broncos in the standings with a win in their next game. Warwick Vets is in fifth place with 18 points and a 6-2 record.

Pilgrim was scheduled to be back in action on Monday against 3-5-1 Ponaganset, and then will take on 2-6-1 East Providence on the road on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

After that, it’s another marquee match-up, this one against Vets, on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m. at Pilgrim.
