Four first-period goals and a 4-point game from senior forward Ty Morgan helped the Pilgrim boys’ hockey team to a 6-3 victory over Mt. Hope on Sunday afternoon, moving it into sole possession of first place in Division III.

The Pats’ special teams went to work right out of the gate, with Jack Clements and Morgan netting power play goals within the first five minutes to give Pilgrim a 2-0 lead.

Collin Driscoll followed with a tally of his own, finishing off a feed from Morgan at 6:23, before Matt Pacheco found the back of the net at 11:11 of the opening period to get Pilgrim out to a 4-0 advantage.

The Pats continued to capitalize on Mt. Hope’s indiscipline play in the second period, as senior captain Pat Reilly netted his squad’s third power play goal of the game at 1:37 of the frame to make it 5-0.

Huskies’ junior forward Jack Dolan got his team on the board less than a minute later, but Mt. Hope’s swing of momentum lasted all of seven seconds. Driscoll scored his second of the game from Morgan off the ensuing faceoff to push the lead back out to five, 6-1.

Dolan and Cam Rancourt scored the only goals in the third period for Mt. Hope, but Pilgrim already had the result secured.

Kyle DiMascio turned aside 19 of the 22 shots he faced, picking up another win to continue his impressive season.

The loss dropped Mt. Hope, which came into the game in first place, to 6-2, while Pilgrim improved its record to 6-1, pushing the Pats a half-game ahead in the standings.

Pilgrim will be back in action on Friday evening when it hosts West Warwick/Exeter-West Greenwich, which has handed the Pats their only loss so far, at 6 p.m. at Thayer Arena. It will then lace up the skates for its second game in as many nights on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. against Johnston/North Providence at the Rhode Island Sports Center.

Jake Gonsalves (22) and Matt Woods (18) combined for 40 points in the win, overwhelming the Crusaders down the stretch.

Pilgrim is now 5-2 in the Division II standings and will have a good chance to continue its winning ways at North Providence (1-7) at 7 p.m. tonight.
