Local companies to hold open house for post-secondary training program

This Sunday, Warwick-based Academic Advantage and Workforce Performance Solutions will hold an open house to provide information about their upcoming CNC Machining Skills Training course.

Intro to Manufacturing and CNC Machining for the Class of 2014, aka NextGen Manufacturer’s Training Program, is a 26-week program open to 2014 high school graduates who are not interested in attending college at this time. It will help them to learn the skills necessary for success in a computerized manufacturing career.

The Open House will be held Sunday, March 30 from noon to 3 p.m. at Academic Advantage’s facility at 1845 Post Road in Warwick. Space is limited, so pre-registration is suggested; walk-ins are welcoming. By attending the open house, you are put into consideration for a scholarship to help cover the $7,900 cost of the program.

To register, contact Barb Jackson at 583-2045 or classes@WPSTraining.com.

The program begins in July, meeting Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. until the end of the year.

“The ideal candidate for this program is someone who is technically-oriented, who enjoys making things and who has decided college is not the place for them right now but could be in the future,” said Jackson.

Jackson added that manufacturing is no longer the “dirty” career many might think of it as.

“It’s robotics, it’s computers,” she said.

During the program, students will learn foundation skills such as precision measurement, print reading and Shop Math and Trig. They will also practice CNC Skills, including foundations of high-speed milling and drilling, and machining processes.

Upon completing the program, students receive six separate certifications:

l Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour General Certification

l I AM JOB READY! certificate from Workforce Performance Solutions

l Shop Math I and Shop Math II certificate from Workforce Performance Solutions and Expert-Technical

l Intro to Machine Operations from Expert-Technical

l Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) Safety Certified Production Tech

l MSSC Quality Certified Production Tech

Each MSSC Certification earns the student three credit hours from National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS), which are accepted at over 3,500 colleges.

Jackson explained that a highlight of the program is the free placement assistance to help students find jobs after completion. She explained that the program has a remarkable job placement rate.

“And it is not a minimum wage job; it is well north of $10 an hour,” said Jackson.

Also, this is not just placing the students in a job, but a career with the potential to move up the ladder.

Through the partnership, Academic Advantage and Workforce Performance Solutions are able to provide students with a well-rounded academic experience.

Academic Advantage provides guidance in the traditional academic areas, such as developing the necessary mathematic proficiencies for skills training. A tutoring service for adults and students in Kindergarten through college, Academic Advantage can provide tutors in almost all areas of study, including GED and college prep for Rhode Island and Massachusetts. They also provide home instruction and online services.

Workforce Performance Solutions, on the other hand, provides the skills training and job placement counseling. Only manufacturing is offered right now, but there are plans to add more skills training programs over the course of the year.
