Lovely little ‘Love Song’ at Burbage

Jeff Church’s recently formed Burbage Theatre Company has been performing wherever they could find space, recently doing an innovative Julius Caesar at Edgewood’s Hall Library.

BTC has landed at Aurora, former home of Providence Black Rep, which has been tastefully renovated to include a bar and reception area, plus an intimate theatre space, where performances may be done in the round or in a traditional setting.

Burbage has been presenting two plays in repertory this summer, and I was able to catch one of them.

John Kolvenbach’s modern play, “Love Song” fits perfectly in the new space, which uses both in-the-round and traditional to tell the story of Beane (James Lucey), a depressed man with mental problems who chooses to hide himself in his room.

His sister, Joan (Allison Crews), is worried and concerned for Beane’s welfare but can’t reach him. She and her husband, Harry (Jonathan Fisher Jr.), are dealing with their own issues.

Along comes Molly (Rachael Perry), a petty thief who steals his few possessions and his heart. Life changes radically for Beane, and his behavior affects his sister and brother-in-law’s relationship.

“I met someone,” Beane tells them, as he changes from a sullen, introverted loser to a verbose extrovert.

Act II opens revealing three changed people, but also raising questions about reality, true happiness and love itself.

“Love Song” is a thinking person’s play, allowing you to draw your own conclusions as to the power of love and its immediate effect on people. It is a pleasant, interesting two hours of theatre that is well directed by Jeff Church, with its many scene changes, and very well acted.

It is being performed in repertory with “Red Light Winter” through September 6. For reservations and information e-mail info@burbage
