Lucci, Durand to be honored as part of Golden Dozen awards

Bishop Hendricken’s Mitch Lucci and Toll Gate’s Chris Durand will be honored as part of the National Football Foundation Rhode Island Chapter’s annual Golden Dozen.

The Golden Dozen honors 12 senior high school football players for their football and academic success, with an additional 12 Silver Scholar-Athletes.

Lucci, who helped lead the Hawks to their fourth consecutive state title from his spot in the defensive backfield, was selected as one of the Golden Dozen. He is joined by Portsmouth’s Andrew DelSanto, Westerly’s Charles Elliott, St. Raphael’s Kevin Garcia, La Salle’s Douglas Harrison, Rogers’ William Leys, Cranston East’s Alex Corvese, East Greenwich’s Andrew Miner, Mt. Hope’s Nick Murgo, Barrington’s James Murphy, Middletown’s Connor Russ and Classical’s Timothy Shea.

Durand, a multi-year starter for the Titans, was chosen for a Silver Scholar-Athlete award, along with Exeter-West Greenwich’s Dwight Anderson, East Providence’s Anthony Andrade, Burrillville’s Andrew Carlson, Scituate’s Garrett Champayne, Narragansett’s Michael Gallagher, Chariho’s Matthew Heroux, Ponaganset’s Matthew Humphrey, West Warwick’s Jonathan Menard, Cumberland’s Joshua Pizzarelli, PCD’s Kyle Salgueiro and Coventry’s Vincent Zannella.

All 24 players will be honored at the 27th annual awards dinner on Monday, May 5 at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick.
