This year, M & J Supply is celebrating their 36th anniversary distributing building materials to the contractor trade. The company began in 1976 as a lone businessman who sold nails to local hardware stores and contractors out of the back of his station wagon. The company soon took space on Messier St. in Providence. In 1979, M & J Supply moved to the Old Assumption Schoolhouse on Potters Avenue, creating a showroom, sales office and warehousing. The business was growing and soon a bookkeeper was needed. The owner's sister-in-law had a tennis partner that was attending Rhode Island College in business management and asked if she would be interested in a part time job.
That was 33 years ago. That novice tennis player, turned avid golfer, is now the Vice President of M & J Supply. Karen Cabral is, as the industry refers to her, the "&" in the M & J name. Karen and her personally selected staff represent the dedication and commitment that this company's celebrates 36 years as a leader in the building industry. M & J Supply is now located at 185 Union Avenue in Providence, a much larger and modern facility compared to its humble beginnings.
Customers know that they will be warmly welcomed by Karen upon arrival, be called by name and given a "shout out" regarding something pertinent to them. Karen's commitment to the products and services that are synonymous with M & J are equally as important as are the relationships with each customer, many of whom have spanned over three decades. It is this quality of service, excellent pricing, and knowledgeable staff which make dealing with M & J Supply such a pleasure. Whether you have been a customer for thirty years or only come in on Saturday mornings, you immediately know that this is a special place to do business with.
M & J Supply has been distributing brand name roofing shingles, vinyl siding, vinyl windows and kitchen cabinets before "box stores" were known. Unlike other suppliers, the size and structure of M & J Supply allows a quick reaction to your questions and needs. Karen prides herself on her staff members who work shoulder to shoulder with her each day. Their knowledge and dedication help develop long-term partnerships with their customers, a rare find in an industry that pays so little attention to customer service. Karen credits her 33 years at M & J Supply to the best "work" family, to loyal customers and to an industry that allowed a nineteen year old female to make a difference so many years ago.
