(Quirky southern saga)

You’ll have to go to Providence Place or wait until this quirky southern tale shows upon Netflix, but catch it one way or another.

Matthew McConaughey, one of Joyce’s favorite actors, stars as Mud, a mysterious man who is running away from something. Two young boys discover him hiding out in an abandoned boat that has landed high up in a tree following a hurricane.

Tye Sheridan plays Ellis, a poor kid who lives on a houseboat on an Arkansas river and is threatened to lose his home and his family. Ellis and his pal, who has troubles of his own, discover Mud living in the boat on an island and slowly discover what he is running from. The mysterious man enlists their help in getting messages to his girlfriend (Reese Witherspoon) and gathering materials to repair the boat.

While an interesting story in itself, “Mud” is made even better by exploring a number of relationships between the boys and the stranger, Mud and his girlfriend, the boys and their families, and a few others.

Sam Shepard has a great role as Mud’s former mentor.

The movie runs over two hours and drags a bit, but the scenes of the Arkansas rivers and surroundings keep you glued to the screen.

It is a tale of relationships, intrigue, trust and loneliness, all leading to an interesting and satisfying conclusion.

Rated PG-13, with a bit of violence, some profanity, but important life lessons for kids who have a tough life.

Note: Providence Place does not have a Senior Wednesday special. “Every day is senior day” we were told as we paid $8.25 instead of $6. Plus you have to pay $2 to park.
