Magical nights ahead at PPAC

Seven of the world’s greatest illusionists have joined together to bring one fantastic magical event to the Providence Performing Arts Center January 16-18.

“The Illusionists” are beginning their American tour after sellout performances at such venues as the Sydney Opera House, Kennedy Center, Mexico and the major cities of Europe, playing before audiences reaching as high as 8,000 people.

Kevin James is part of the magical group of seven who has performed in 90 countries and is making his first trip to Rhode Island.

“No, I’m not that Kevin James,” he told me by phone from Chicago, where the show has been wowing audiences for two weeks. “I’m Kevin James the inventor, comedian and collector of the strange and unusual. I had my name years before him.”

This Kevin James is known for his innovative illusions. He has created many unique magic effects used in shows of other famous magicians, including Doug Henning, Mark Wilson and David Copperfield. In 2003 he was named Parlour Magician of the Year by the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood and in 2005 was named “Most Original” by the International Magicians Society.

“We’ll be giving you the best of our game,” he said, “and we open the show with an ensemble piece.

“We’re like a family, having traveled together for over three years. We broke all records when we were performing on Broadway. We were the seventh highest grossing show.”

James appeared on the third season of America’s Got Talent. The cast of “The Illusionists” were invited back recently to promote their tour and given three minutes to perform.

Kevin said that the show moves at a fast pace with seven of the best magician/illusionists in the world performing their best acts.

Tickets are still available for this one-of-a kind performance by calling 421-ARTS or visiting the PPAC box office.
