After going 0-14 last year in its inaugural season as a program, the Pilgrim girls’ lacrosse team started out 0-4 this year. But last Wednesday, the Pats finally broke through.
They defeated Westerly 10-5 to pick up the first win in the program’s history. Sophomore Haley McCusker led the way offensively, as she scored five times and assisted on another.
Cara Beneduce scored twice, while Amibeth Marks, Brianna Boucher and Betsy Heidel all added a goal apiece. Marks also had an assist.
In goal, Kayleen Murphy stopped 11 Westerly shots to preserve the win.
Now Pilgrim will try to keep it up. They were scheduled to play on Monday against Portsmouth, with results unavailable at press time, before playing Chariho on Tuesday and rival Warwick Vets on Thursday.
