Mako jumps on boat… register for the Galilee Fishing Tournament

Posted

This weekend JR Carlow of Burrillville fished for tuna and shark 25 miles south/southwest of Block Island when the tables turned and it almost seemed like the sharks were fishing for JR and his crew.

JR said, "(We) set up and … (put) heavy chum in the water. After three hours we saw a large fish break about 1\2 mile out. 20 min later the fish (a mako shark) was attacking our middle bait balloon about 20 yards away. Seconds later it leaped clear out of the water and landed on the starboard/stern gunwale. As it did, it smashed right through a 50 Tiagra bent butt (fishing) rod sending the top half some 15 feet in the air. The mako then flopped on the side slapping the boat and motor for about three seconds, then fell in the water and never saw it again. It was about eight feet and 250 pounds. Scared the life out of three grown men and two 11 year- olds."

Glad you, the crew and children did not get hurt JR. Fishing can be dangerous… be careful all… you never know what is going to happen.

Few comments at DEM fisheries hearing

The Department of Environmental Management's (DEM) public hearing held last Thursday at the URI Bay Campus was extremely quite. With a full agenda of eleven (primarily) commercial fishing items those in attendance had few comments to make on proposed amendments to fisheries management plans. One by one, hearing officer Mark Gibson worked thought the agenda from pot/trap regulations on a variety of species, to monkfish, American Shad, a variety of ground fish and Atlantic Menhaden. The meeting was over in less than an hour. Several participants related that DEM and the Advisory Panels to the RI Marine Fisheries Council had done a good job at planning and venting proposed changes at earlier meetings. Hat's off to DEM, staff members and fisheries volunteers for a job well done.

Where's the bite

Offshore. Al Conti of Snug Harbor Marina said "Offshore fishing is just starting to pick up and anything being caught is way out there. The vessel Waugh's Up of North Rip Charters landed a 278 pound sword fish and a big eye tuna at Atlantis Canyon and Lois DeFusco of Hot Reels Sport Fishing charters landed several albacore from the same area." Vin Catauro reported a slow day fishing for giants with David Appolonia of South Kingston. Catauro said, "No blue fin but we kept hooking up with shark after shark. We even caught the same blue shark twice. The first time we hooked him he fouled a second line getting hooked in the back. We released him and continued to fish, then we hooked him a second time… he still had the hook and bait on his back. Not a very smart shark." This weekend anglers John Stavrakas and Adam Dunstan both fished the fishing lanes west of the Dump in calm seas with no wind or drift and landed blue sharks.

Cod fishing not bad last week. Roger Simpson reporting for the Frances Fleet said, "Anthony Mercurio from Providence jigged up three fine cod and a few other anglers had three cod apiece to take home. A half dozen or so other cod in the 20 lb range were boated as well." Visit www.francesfleet.com for cod fluke and tuna trip schedules.

Bonito reports continue to come in with fish being caught all along the southern coastal shore. Phil Matteson of Breachway Bait & Tackle, Charlestown said, "Customers are catching them on little Deadly Dicks and some have even picked them up by trolling four to six inch plugs at five knots about ¼ mile off shore." Matteson landed a 13 pound bonito himself with a deadly dick last week.

Fluke fishing remains strong. Matteson from Breachway Bait & Tackle said, "Fluke fishing had been off but picked up this week. Anglers are landing them in 45 to 55 feet of water along the southern coastal shore. John Wunner of John's Bait & Tackle Warwick, said, "Customers are often catching five to six nice fish south of the bridges with anglers still landing two to three fish in the mid-Bay area." This week I fished with Angela Yang and Andy Chen of Providence. Andy out- fished us all landing six nice fish in about 90 minutes time fishing both the west and east sides of Beavertail, Jamestown. Jim McCauley, South Kingstown, weighed in a 10.1 pound fluke last week at Snug Harbor. Conti said, "Large fish are being caught south of the Charlestown Breachway in the 50 to 60 foot depth range."

Striped bass fishing at Block Island remains strong with large fish in the 30 and 40 pound range being taken daily as well as a lot of smaller stripers mixed in with blue fish. Surf casters are finding the fish out a bit further. Phil Matteson of Breachway Bait & Tackle said, "Bass and blues are being caught from shore but they are not in the first wave."
