A Woonsocket man is facing multiple charges following a home invasion, violent carjacking and high-speed chase through multiple communities on Thursday.

Rhode Island State Police on Friday announced that Michael Ebiwa, 26, of 104 Sayles St. in Woonsocket, will be arraigned on charges of carrying a pistol without a license or permit, altering the marks of identification on a firearm, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, eluding a police officer, failing to stop after an accident and operating on a suspended license.

He is also being presented as bail violator in Superior Court on previous charges of eluding a police office and operating with a suspended license, police said.

The situation began shortly after noon on May 1, when the Woonsocket Police Department issued an alert for a gold Nissan bearing Rhode Island registration that was wanted in connection with an armed home invasion that had occurred in their community.

According to state police, North Smithfield police subsequently advised they were in pursuit of the vehicle on Route 146 southbound. State police engaged in the pursuit of the vehicle, which entered onto Route 295 south in Lincoln and then exited onto Route 7 south. The vehicle continued at a high rate of speed as it entered North Providence, according to police, and then lost its left front tire as it neared the intersection of Dome and Malbone streets in Providence.

At that point, police say the suspect abandoned the Nissan and carjacked a silver Volkswagen station wagon on Oakland Avenue. During the course of the carjacking, police say the suspect discharged a round from a pistol, shooting the victim in the foot.

Then, at approximately 1:35 p.m., Johnston police contacted state police indicating they were attempting to stop the Volkswagen, which was now traveling on Route 295 north in Smithfield.

Troopers pursued the vehicle through multiple jurisdictions, ultimately ending up at the intersection of Route 116 and Mendon Road in Cumberland, where the vehicle struck a guardrail and a white utility van. Following the crash, Ebiwa was removed from the vehicle, taken into custody and transported to the Lincoln Woods Barracks.

A search of the vehicle revealed a black backpack containing one High Point C9 9 mm Luger handgun, zip ties, duct tape, three cell phones and approximately $1,400 in cash.

Ediwa is set to be arraigned in Sixth District Court, according to state police.
