Many helped clean up Buckeye Brook

To the Editor:

I want to thank all the volunteers who came out just after the rains to help clean up the Buckeye Brook watershed once again this year. We like the public to know that as a watershed advocacy group, we care not only about the brooks and ponds that define our area, but also all the land that drains to our waters. That truly is what a whole watershed is.

On Saturday, April 20 we had 45 volunteers of all ages who worked on several sites, and on Sunday another 19 people participated. We collected about 1,000 pounds of trash, including 62 tires. It seems like the watershed grows a new crop of tires every year!

Thank you also to our local groups and companies who assisted us in various ways: the R.I. Resource Recovery Corporation, Warwick Departments of Sanitation & Public Works, Warwick Neck Improvement Association, Conimicut Village Association, Warwick Sewer Authority, Northeast Family Martial Arts of Coventry, Boy Scout Troops 1, 7 & 183 and D’Ambra Construction Company. We would especially like to thank Officer Driscoll of the Warwick Police for his assistance in aiding a team on Lakeshore Drive who had been cornered by an aggressive dog on the loose.

Even though the early rains on Saturday discouraged a larger turnout, we can look around our roadsides and woods and see the success of Earth Day here in our neighborhood. Thank you again! See you next year!

The Buckeye Brook Coalition

Marcia Pena,

Secretary of the Board
