Many made 'Scramble for SIDS' a success

To the Editor:

The 20th annual Narragansett Spring Scramble for SIDS was held on May 25 at the North Kingstown Golf Course.
The golf course was in great shape, with all the new improvements a real challenge. John, Brian and the entire staff did a wonderful job of accommodating 120 hardy and generous golfers. Pelly’s 19th Hole hosts Paul and Greg once again were outstanding with all the food and beverages. The staff handled the crowd with ease.
The volunteers, who are the heart of every tournament, were: Joe McClanaghan and Taylor Feuty on the putting contest. A dedicated group from the Rhode Island Miscarriage-Infant Death and Stillbirth, Mary and Tom, Frank, Mike, Denise and Nicole collectively managed the 50/50 raffles on hole 10. Thank you all!
Others who aided in preparation were: Chris Gorham, Bill and Jeane Ryan, Representative Don Lally, Mike and Derrick of Sweeney’s Wine & Spirits, Bob & Family of Champlin’s, Doug Jr. for delivery and Kiana Fanning for taking messages. Also, Lori and Bill Hickey, Gator Grandchamp, Al at Northeast Golf and Heidi for all the errands. Thank you all once again.
The winning score for the Men’s, Ken MacLean, Steve MacLean, Steve King and Jim Grady, was -9 on a wet New England day. The Mixed Group score, -2, was a tie. Going back to the handicap holes, Team Noonan was the winner on an Eagle chip-in by Linda Falcone on #17. Bob Noonan, Ellen Fournier, Bob McBroom and Linda “Eagle” Falcone took home the lobsters. The Closest to the Pin were #3 Peter Sheridan, #8 Mark Bolster and #14 David “Slick” Barbera. Longest Drives Men were #4 Jim “Diggs” Diggle, #7 Dale Drombrowski and #11 Brendan Fogarty. Longest Drives Women were #4 Nancy Steinmeyer, #7 (2 winners) Jeane Ryan and Ellen Fournier and #11 Linda “Eagle” Falcone. All received a box of Titleist golf balls.
The popular putting contest had 14 golfers qualify for the finals, with Tony Ellwood the winner of the 50/50 pot. The “small cut” hole made that quite an accomplishment.
In the 20 years of this tournament, we have been blessed with generous hole sponsors and donators. This year we highlight the Coast Guard House Restaurant, Jim Durkin Realty, Pelly’s 19th Hole, The Kilcullen Family, Tom Denneny, Peg and Chris Gorham, Al at Northeast Golf, Come Screen With Me, PJ’S Pub Narragansett, Capt. Rodman Sykes of the F/V Virginia Marise, AAA of New England, Gilligan’s Pub, the Oates Family, Sweeney’s Wine & Spirits, the Sweeney Family, Carolyn and Joe Tedino, Lori and Bill Hickey, Capt. Steve Follett of the F/V Heather Lynn, Capt. Peter Wakeman, Jim D’Angelis Realty, Edron Business Systems, Inc., the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Fogarty family for their continued support.
This year we were minus one of our tournament founders, Peter “Eagle” McAuley. His jokes and sense of humor will be missed.
Rep. Don Lally stepped to the plate with both a hole sponsorship and donation even though he had a prior commitment “up-city” … thank you Don.
Next year’s tournament will remain at North Kingstown Golf Course as well as Pelly’s 19th Hole on Friday, May 24, 2013 (Memorial Day Weekend). First-to-pay-plays. Notify by April 15, 2013. To confirm, contact Joe McCue, 737-0995 or mail to SIDS, 42 Overton St., Warwick, RI 02889.
As we have done since his passing, a donation will be made to the Rhode Island Alliance of S.I.D.S. for Capt. Bob Sweeney of F/V Rhonda & Denise.
Thank you all and see you next year.
