Many pulling to fight MS

Twenty-two teams of 25 members each vied for the best time to pull a 211,000-pound 757 Fed Ex plane a distance of 12 feet in the sixth annual MS Jet Pull held Saturday at Green Airport. Team members paid a $50 registration and were asked for a minimum contribution of $50. The pull has its devotees, like Betty Rafferty of Warwick who dyed her hair orange as well as painted her fingernails in keeping with the MS signature color. “It’s so much fun to say you’ve pulled a jet and it beats riding a bike 150 miles,” she said. Betsy, who has MS, has also done the bike ride. MS Society RI Chapter president Kathy Mechnig said more than 900 cyclists raised $870,000 in the ride. Funds are split between the national organization to conduct research and the local chapter to assist people with the disease, she said. With more than 400 participating, the Jet Pull was projected to raise $50,000. Teams were given two tries to pull the jet with their best time counted. There were also competitions between “light” teams with fewer members. Pictured here is the team from Kent Hospital that made this pull in 7.3 seconds. There were times in the range of 6 seconds, but clearly the winner was the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. (Warwick Beacon photo)
