Margaret Walsh

Margaret “Marguerite” (Sylvia) Walsh, 96, of Bellevue Avenue, Warwick, died April 15, 2012 at home. She was the wife of the late Francis A. Walsh.

Born in Warwick, a daughter of the late Joseph F. and Margaret (Smythe) Sylvia, she was a lifelong Warwick resident and a communicant of St. Timothy Parish in Warwick. Mrs. Walsh was employed by the State of Rhode Island for 47 years in the former Department of Social Welfare and the Department of Mental Health, Retardation and Hospitals. On her retirement in 1983 as senior administrative aide to the Director of MHRH, a park on the grounds of the John O. Pastore Center was named in her honor in recognition of her service under eight department directors. It is known as the Margaret S. Walsh Park and is used by Center residents and employees.

Mrs. Walsh was a graduate of the former St. Xavier Academy, Providence, Class of 1933, and Bryant-Stratton College (now Bryant University). She was a member of St. Xavier Academy Alumnae Association, Bryant University Alumni Association and the MHRH Retiree Association.

She is survived by eight nieces and nephews, 15 grandnieces and grandnephews and eight great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was the sister of the late Marie A. Sargeant, C. Eileen Gibson, Francis J. Sylvia and Thomas A. Sylvia.

Her funeral will be held April 20 at 9 a.m. from Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Timothy Church, 1799 Warwick Ave., Warwick. Visiting hours are April 19 from 4-7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. Timothy Church or the Guillain-Barre Syndrome Foundation, Holly Bldg., 104½ Forrest Ave., Narberth, PA 19072.
