Marrow donor registration Oct. 12 dedicated to 11-year-old

A marrow donor registration drive, dedicated to a sixth grader who is battling sickle cell anemia, is being held on Sunday, Oct. 12 from noon to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Capitol Hill Health Center, 40 Candace St., Providence.

For Jeralene, finding a match on the Be The Match Registry is critical, since there are no matches within her family, according to the Rhode Island Blood Center.

The only known cure for sickle cell anemia is a marrow transplant.

For those in need of a marrow transplant who cannot find a familial match, it becomes critical to search the Be The Match Registry for a marrow match.

The registration process is simple and takes only a few minutes. Registration includes completing paperwork and a cheek swab.

The Be The Match Registry is looking for registrants between the ages of 18 and 44. Typing fees for this drive are covered by health insurance and the Michael’s Fund of Fall River, Mass.
