Massasoit too much for Knights

Posted

The CCRI Men’s Soccer team was edged at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Mass., Wednesday afternoon, surrendering two second half goals to fall 2-0. With the loss, the Knights fell to 0-3-1 on the season and 0-1 in Region XXI play.

Head Coach Gabe Toro noted that Nathan Dacosta (Warwick) and Jossiemar Caballero (Johnston) started at midfield and played a good first half for the Knights, as they were able to control the ball more often against Massasoit. Because of CCRI’s possession, forwards Evan Gaudreau (North Kingstown) and David Moreno (Warwick) were able to generate some opportunities toward the end of the half. Despite their solid play, the Knights went into the half tied 0-0.

In the second half, the wheels began to fall off for the Knights, with fatigue looking to play a role in CCRI committing mental errors. In the first 15 minutes of the second half, Massasoit’s Fabio Cula was able to capitalize on CCRI’s lack of possession, scoring two goals only eight minutes apart to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Stephan Teixeira assisted on both goals for Massasoit. Gaudreau and Moreno were once again able to generate some offense in the dying minutes of the game, but they weren’t able to cut into the Knights’ deficit.

“Right now, it seems that we’re playing well in compartments,” Toro said. “In order to turn this around, we need to jell and put it all together. I believe that the talent and fundamentals are there, the players just need to trust each other and play together consistently, and not in waves.”

The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, September 20, when they host Monroe Community College at 1 p.m. at the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln.

Lady Knights fall to Springfield College 2-1

The CCRI women’s soccer team traveled to Springfield, Mass., to take on the Pride of Springfield College Junior Varsity team. The Lady Knights lost to the Pride 2-1. With the loss the Lady Knights have a 2-2 record for the season.

Springfield took a quick 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of play as forward Stephanie Scriglio scored on a beautiful shot that hit the upper 90 corner of the CCRI goal over outstretched goalkeeper Jennifer Kilburn (Norton, Mass). As play continued Springfield pressured the CCRI defense but the Lady Knights held on without yielding another goal during the first half of play.

As the second half began both teams traded some scoring chances but could not convert.  Freshman forward Kyanna Ivey-Jones (Pawtucket) broke away alone toward the Springfield goal and put up a quality shot but goalkeeper Heather DeLude was able to make a very nice save to thwart her effort. The teams continued to go back and forth, trading quality chances with Springfield having the slight edge. With approximately 12 minutes left in the match Springfield struck again on another goal by Scriglio, giving the Pride a 2-0 lead.

However, eight minutes later CCRI finally got on the board with just five minutes left in the match with a goal from co-captain Stepheny Perez (Providence) assisted by sophomore midfielder Carla Porras (Narragansett). As the game closed CCRI had a chance to tie the game with another quality scoring opportunity when they were awarded a direct free kick just 24 yards out from the Springfield goal. Perez, known for her long-range shooting and excellent set pieces, took the kick and put the ball into a dangerous area in front of the Pride’s goal but none of the other Lady Knights could convert for the game tying goal. “Springfield is always a tough opponent and they always have a bunch of quality players,” said CCRI head coach Dennis Grassini. “They gave us a tough time tonight but our team is not one that will ever give up. Games of this nature can only help us get better as a team. Sophomore midfielder Carla Porras had an outstanding game showing some great skill and dazzling footwork throughout the entire match.”
