The Edgewood Yacht Club launches another season of sailing and racing on Narragansett Bay with their 115th Opening Day Ceremony on May 19 at 10 a.m. at 1 Shaw Avenue, Cranston. Ceremonies begin with the procession of the Flag Officers, Past Commodores, elected board members, and invited guests, led by the Pawtuxet Rangers as they march down Shaw Avenue hill to the pavilion on the docks and raise the flags to celebrate a new season. Greetings and remarks are made by Commodore Jeff Lanphear as he introduces the 2012 officers of the club: Vice Commodore Marie DeRoche, Rear Commodore Gene Whalen, Fleet Captain Flo Spenard, Secretary Wayne Kazirian, Treasurer Nancy Aubin.
The day proceeds with an Opening Day Race at 1 p.m., and is later followed with the Parade of Boats, at 4. The parade is a time-honored tradition and has always been a festive event, as a wide array of over 30 sailing vessels and powerboats wind their way around the waters in front of the club under full color. All events are open to the public and the club welcomes anyone interested in exploring a full or social membership for the year.
On April 24, the membership of the yacht club voted for the design plan to rebuild the clubhouse that was lost in a fire last January.
Since the fire, a survey was conducted of the membership and a pre-building committee formed to assess the scope and reasonability for the construction of a new building. Through the hiring of an architect from Durkee, Brown, Viveiros & Werenfels, two possible plans were drafted, one of which the membership voted to approve.
