Mayor to help in selection of international Episcopal Church leader

Posted

As a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and parishioner at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pawtuxet Village, Mayor Scott Avedisian has been elected to the Deputation for the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The convention, which runs from June 25 to July 3, brings together all 109 dioceses from around the world that will not only choose the church’s next international bishop, but also work on budgeting and addressing global issues, such as the Palestinian/Israeli conflict.

Avedisian, a Senior Warden of Trinity Episcopal Church, has been appointed as Deputy to the Dispatch of Business Committee, which will help to organize and run the event.

Avedisian said he is most excited for helping to choose the next bishop.

“It’ll be fascinating,” he said. “How often how can you say you had a part in choosing the leader of your faith on an international level?”

Having spent his life with the Episcopal Church, Avedisian served two stints in the vestry, served as president of the Standing Committee for the Rhode Island Diocese for three years, served as a Judge on the Ecclesiastical Trial Court and a member of the Committee on Resolutions and was appointed to Diocesan Council by Bishop Geralyn Wolf.

Similarly, Avedisian has been an Honorary Chairman and Vice President of the Episcopal Charities Fund, sitting for 20 years on the Board of Directors for St. Mary’s Home for Children as well as St. Elizabeth Home and the Episcopal Conference Center.

Avedisian said working all day long with his church will be a rewarding experience, “a little different, but good.”
